On our second day in China, we had already been asked to join the school for supper. Nervous and unsure of the food and table manners, we politely agreed. Coming to China, the thing I was most nervous about was the food, and now my first dining experience would be with the school staff. 

In Chinese culture the most important person sits facing the door. When plates of food started arriving, I wished I had practiced my chopstick skills before arriving in China. 

Chinese culture is all about being hospitable (好 客 的 ). This means ordering lots of food and encouraging you to keep eating. It also means drinking wine or tea. You'll never have an empty glass. 

It's polite to try everything, but if you know me, you would know l don't eat everything. Fresh fish? Sure, an entire fish on the plate staring at you while you pick at it. Not for me. Snails with their shell crushed and cooked into a meal?No thanks!The lung of a pig? I'll pass. It seems that the Chinese really eat everything!

The Chinese people are friendly. They want to learn about you and teach you about their culture. They like to ask questions, and it is polite to ask them many questions and keep the conversation going. 

Every day I'm pushed out of my comfort zone (舒 适 区 ). But for the most part, I discover something I really enjoy. The experience itself is quite amazing, I've learned a lot, yet there's still so much to learn. It surely is different from my culture and way of living, but being in their shoes and seeing life through their eyes has really helped me to understand. And I look forward to discovering more!

Since humans sent the first satellite（卫星） to space in the 1950s，scientists have been studying an important topic：how to grow plants in space if humans live there one day.A recent experiment at the Tiangong space station makes a big step forward.

Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings（幼苗） during the Shenzhou XIV mission.The researcher said，"The rice seedlings are growing very well."Since the rice experiment began on July 29，the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety（高杆水稻品种） have reached a height of 30 centimeters.The seedlings of the dwarf rice variety（矮杆水稻品种） have grown to 5 centimeters，China Daily reported on August 30，2022.

While there have been other rice experiments in space，this one is the first of its kind to produce the complete life cycle of a plant—it begins with a seed and ends with a grown plant producing new seeds.

Such food﹣growing experiments are not for astronauts.They can solve food problems on Earth.By sending seeds to space，we can create mutated（突变的） seeds that can produce higher yields（产量）on Earth.

For more than 30 years，China has developed over 260 new types of seeds in space.They are planted on Earth every year.

According to Yao Tong，an engineer from Hainan Aerospace Engineering Breeding Research Center，30%of strawberries sold in Beijing are "space strawberries"，which are as big as eggs.The center has also produced "space tomatoes"with yields increased by 30%，and "space bananas"with a growth cycle shortened from 13 months to 9 months.

Leoh Ming Pei, one of the world's best-knownarchitects (建筑师), left over 50 designs during his longcareer. These stand as his gifts to the world. 

The glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France might be Pei's most famous work. Back in the1980s, the Louvre Museum was having trouble with traffic. To solve the problem, Pei planned to dig an undergroundhall and place a glass pyramid on top. Many people didn't like the idea. They said it was too modern for the classical museum. However, the idea turned out to be a success. It is not only the museum's main entrance, but also a huge skylight (天窗). 

In 2006, Pei was invited to build a museum in his hometown Suzhou. He tried to include local and historical ideas in his design. He built small halls with traditional white walls and dark roofs, just like the classical Chinese gardens. Moreover, the lines and windows in the roof bring something modern to the museum. 

The famous Lion Grove Garden (狮子林) in Suzhou used to be owned by Pei's family. Pei spent some summers there as a child. Maybe that was when Pei developed his interest in architecture. Pei spent most of his adult years in the US, first studying at universities and then working in different places. Even though he was trained in the US, the beauty of Chinese Classics was well displayed in many of his designs. "I've never left China because home is a place your heart always belongs to," Pei once said. 

Over the last century, many building trends (潮流) have come and gone. But the works of Pei have not. "A lasting architecture has to have roots." Pei once told The New York Times. That may explain why he and his works have stood the test of time. 

At the age of 16, Einstein always played with a group of naughty (淘气的) kids. Because he was so busy playing, he didn't study enough and failed his final exam. 

One morning, when Einstein was holding a fishing rod (钓竿) and was about to go fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said calmly (平静地), "Einstein, you're so fond of playing all day that you failed your exam. I'm worried about your future. "

Reading something comfortable might be your first choice. But why not challenge yourself to read something more complicated(复杂的)? It is a good way of pushing yourself to improve your reading skills. 

I saved the rice and wheat carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away. 

Then when my crop(庄稼) bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them, but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows(稻草人), which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat. 

With my new rice and wheat to store, I found a new problem. The fine rice and wheat ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly bowls — one for rice and one for wheat. 

Next I made some tools from hard wood and cloth to make bread. I made bread with my tools. I spent the third year on the island in farming and making bread. 

Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore(探索) the island by sea. 

I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined(坚定的) to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn the tree into a boat. 

When it was time to sail, I realised I had made my boat too far from the nearest river. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of work. 

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.
