Learning in the Field

A fun farming class took place in the fields! On Sept 15, Grade 7 students from Jinan No.34 Middle School, Shandong, went on a field trip. They learned about farming, reported Qilu News. At the grain base (粮食基地), teachers talked about grains with students and answered their questions. The students saw millet and soybeans (小米和大豆). They touched the wheat (小麦) and learned that people usually harvest (收获) the wheat at the end of September.

Young Reporters Put on a Show at School

Students at Johnson Middle School in US, are reporting their school's news in their own news program. The students take turns to make the program. They set up a green screen, sit down and give their classmates the headlines (新闻提要) of the day. They include (包括) what's going on in the school and news about future events. They share the lunch menu of the day. "The kids come in excitement. They love being on the news and sharing the news with other kids. They are eager (渴望) to know what's happening around them." said B.J. Burke, the school teacher.

On Nov 8, students from Nanjing Foreign Language School have a special class. During the class, they have a hands-on experience of making folk clothes. The students took on the challenge (挑战) making their own bags through tie-dyeing (扎染). It is a dyeing skill to make blue calico (印花布). The dye and the cotton material (材料) used to make blue calico all come from nature. "Tie-dyeing is a magical art. Everyone does it a bit differently, and you never know exactly how it will look in the end." said Ma Qianyu, a grade 8 student, happy with her work. The students will later go to Nanjing Museum to get more knowledge about life in Jiangsu and the folk customs there.

One night, my family was driving back from visiting my uncle in the middle of a very bad snowstorm.

The road was normally two lanes (车道) going in each direction, but there was so much snow that it was down to one lane. We were scared, but we felt safe because my father used to work as a truck driver. He's a very safe driver.

We were all alone on the highway until three cars pulled up right behind us. They used their lights of the car and beeped their horns (按喇叭), wanting to get by us, but there was no place for us to pull over.

After a while, we stopped at a restaurant to wait for the storm to calm down.

The three cars behind us drove in too. They were full of young men. They were talking about how slow we were driving. One of them said loudly enough for us to hear, "If you don't know how to drive, you shouldn't be on the highway."

Soon after, the young men left even though the storm was getting worse. My father decided that we should wait inside, hoping the storm would stop.

After it cleared a little, we headed down the road. Finally, we came around a turning. We could not believe our eyes—the three cars were all in the ditch (沟渠)!

Dad ran to the cars. The young men were all okay, but they were freezing and very frightened. A police officer arrived and took some of the young men to the next gas station. We gave two of them a ride.

It was a very quiet drive. My dad turned to the young driver and said with a little smile, "You know, if you don't know how to drive, you should stay off the road."

The man was very upset. My dad smiled and said, "I was a truck driver for fifteen years and we had a saying: There are old drivers and there are bold (大胆的) drivers, but there aren't any old bold drivers."

The young man understood and hung his head in shame.

When you are tired of buildings, you can visit one of London's beautiful parks. 

Hyde Park first opened to the people of London in the seventeenth century. It is not far from the shops of busy Oxford Street, but it is nice and quiet. In the center is the lake called the Serpentine, and you can take a boat out on the water. 

There are usually a lot of people at Speakers' Corner. Some people come here because they want to tell the world important or interesting things—about the government, science, or "the end of the world". They stand at the Corner, and call out to all the people around them. Other people stand and listen, and sometimes laugh too. 

Kensington Gardens is next to Hyde Park. Here you can see a statue（雕像）of Peter Pan, the famous boy in the book Peter Pan written by J. M. Barrie. There is also a playground here, called the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground. And the playground has lots of exciting things for children. 

Regent's Park is the home of London Zoo. The zoo opened in 1828, and it has animals from all over the world. There is also a theatre in the park. On a summer's evening, you can sit out and watch a play created by Shakespeare. Or you can see the park from the water—take a boat along the canal（运河）from Camden Lock to Little Venice. In the summer, you can listen to music in the park. 

St James's Park is next to the Mall. It is a small park, but very beautiful, and it is the oldest of the royal（皇家）parks. Lots of birds live on and around the lake in the centre of the park. 

Almost all of us have had a flag raising experience.Hold it，then raise it.It's so easy.But doing so on the moon can be really difficult. 

There is no air on the moon，which leads to the first problem with flag raising—there's no wind to keep the flag flying. 

In the earlier Chang'e missions，the national flag of China was painted on the surface of the moon landers and rovers（月球着陆器和月球车）.In the Chang'e-5 mission，a special flag display system was invented.Since the Chang'e-5 didn't carry an astronaut to the moon，the work had to be done by a robotic arm.Researchers worked hard to make the display system weigh only 1 kilogram. The material of the flag is also a big problem.Normal flags on the earth would be broken or even destroyed quickly on the moon because of the radiation from the sun and huge temperature differences during the day and night. 

It took the researchers more than a year to find the ideal material.It was developed by Professor Xu Weilin and his team from Wuhan Textile University.It could help the flag keep its color and shape in the environment on the surface of the moon. 

The scene of the five-star red flag against the dark sky on the surface of the moon was taken by a camera on the lander and then sent back to the earth.Every Chinese was amazed at the history-making moment（时刻）.At the same time，we should also know and remember the teams behind this great effort.
