江西省抚州市东乡区2023-2024学年九年级上学期期中英语试卷

 请阅读下面短文,根据短文内容从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项

Almost everyone is afraid of something—snakes, heights, public speaking and so on.

It is normal and can even be helpful to experience fear sometimes. In dangerous situations,fear can keep our bodies alert(警醒的) so that we can act quickly to protect ourselves.

But for some people,fear develops into a"phobia"which is a strong and unreasonable fear of something. For example,the majority of us feel a little scared when looking down from a tall building. But people with height phobia may have trouble breathing, feel dizzy or turn down a great job just because the company is on the 20th floor.

Phobias can prevent you from living a normal life. "People with spider phobia would stay out of their home or dormitory room for days if they thought a spider was present," Katherina Hauner,a researcher at Northwestern University US, told ABC news. This is why scientists have been trying to find a cure for this disease.

Since fear comes from experience—from what we are told, what we see others experience and what happens to us ﹣ some scientists think if they can"rewrite"these unpleasant memories, they might be able to help people overcome their phobias.

In a study by Hauner and other scientists participants with spider phobia were asked to first touch a spider with a paintbrush. Seeing that it was not actually dangerous,they then tried touching it while wearing a glove. Finally,they could hold it with their hands.

Certain medicine has also been found to be helpful. Back in 2010,researchers at the University of Hiroshima Japan injected( 注射) a special medicine into a fish—who was afraid of light—to turn off the fear center in its brain. From then on, the fish no longer feard light.

While the search for solutions to phobias is making great progress,it's an open question whether getting rid of fear is good. Some people want to use these methods to make soldiers fight harder in wars by taking away their sense of fear. Dave Smithson of the Charity Anxiety UK thinks that's a bad idea. "It's fear that prevents us from doing crazy things. "he says. "There's a name for people who don't have fear of consequences: psychopaths(精神变态)".

(1)、How does the writer make the meaning of "phobia"clear?
A、By making comparisons. B、By giving examples. C、By giving data in numbers. D、By giving descriptions.
(2)、Which of the following shows the progress scientists have made in fighting phobia?
A、New medicine can shut off fear centers in animal brains whenever needed. B、They can use phobias to keep our bodies alert so that we can protect ourselves. C、They can now reduce the pain which is connected with phobia. D、They have succeeded in helping some people change memories related to phobia.
(3)、What does the underlined word "that" refer to?
A、rewriting unpleasant memories B、taking away soldiers' sense of fear C、getting rid of fear D、using certain medicine
(4)、Which of the following would Dave Smithson probably agree with?
A、There is nothing to fear except fear itself. B、We should not let fear affect our decisions. C、Fear is not a completely bad thing. D、Without fear everyone would be brave.
(5)、What's the main idea of the passage?
A、To inform us of fear and phobia B、To discuss scientific studies related to fear C、To discuss if it is good to try to get rid of fear D、To show us what kind of role fear plays in our lives

Animals

Corona viruses are common in animals. Sometimes, animals get infected (感染的) with these viruses which may then spread to human beings. To protect yourself, you should not visit live animal markets or have direct contact with wild animals. Stay away from raw meat, animal organs and other undercooked animal products.

When an infectious pet was found in Hong Kong, some may wonder if one can get virus from their pets. Until today, there is no evidence that a dog, cat or any pet can transmit (传播) COVID-19. Please do not kill or give up pets!

Touching surface with virus

Studies suggest that COVID-19 virus may stay on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. However, the number may change under different conditions such as type of surface, temperature or the environment.

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with ethyl alcohol (酒精). After touching it, clean your hands with alcohol or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.

Package(包裹)

Before delivering to your home, a package has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature. Therefore, the possibility of being infectious because of your package from COVID-19-reported areas is rather low. There is no need to send your package back.

Smoking

An article posted on Wechat recently says that cigarette can protect smokers from COVID-19 and thus make cigarettes sell very well. It is an online rumor (谣言)! As has been known, smoking harms people's health. It weakens the immune system and worsens diabetes and blood pressure. No smoking is still a must!

Transportation

According to Feng Luzhao, an expert from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the major routes of transmission are still through respiratory droplets and direct contact. In order to protect yourself in underground station, wearing a mask and keeping your hands clean are good ways. People are also encouraged to use a personal transportation card or pay for the ticket via an app. After taking public transportation, washing hands is necessary.

Every year on 24 April, it's Space Day of China.  It's a day to celebrate the country's growth in space exploration.  The manned space missions (载人航天任务) are a big part of it.  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

What problems do astronauts face?

In space, astronauts face many problems.  There is little gravity (重力) there, which affects their bodies. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} What's more, if something goes wrong during their mission all of a sudden, they have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure.  That's why astronauts have to be smart, strong, and ready for any challenge before they can go to space.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

"To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to the Earth safely, over 200 kinds of training are set," said Huang Weifen, the chief designer of the project.  These include not only physical training but also some basic science training.  So before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space.  Huang explained that astronauts wear diving suits (潜水服) that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time.  She said that it was quite hard.  For example, Nie Haisheng even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.

A. How are astronauts trained?

B. What is the weightless feeling?

C. Being an astronaut is cool but difficult.

D. Also, being in a tiny spaceship can make them feel stressed out.

E. One of the hardest parts of the training is the underwater training.

 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

My father is lucky. He falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. However, my mother is not so lucky. Sleep usually takes longer to come, counting sheep may be the answer. With their` eyes closed, people picture a line of white sheép. Then, they count as each sheep jump over a· fence.

This method is as old as time. Some people believe it comes from the Islamic culture. While others believe it started with shepherds in old Britain. They couldn't get to sleep at night because they were worried about all of the sheep in the field. So they would calm themselves by counting the sheep up to make sure they were all safe.

A team of scientists at Oxford University sarried out a study on counting sheep. They aimed to see if the method really worked. They put 41 people with sleep problems in three groups. The first group went to sleep in their normal ways. And group two needed to imagine peaceful scenes like waterfalls to help them fall asleep. The last group counted sheep.

The scientists got some interesting results. The people in the second group got to sleep around 20 minutes faster than usual. However, those in the last group took longer than usual to fall asleep. I he scientists believed counting sheep made the people feel nervous. As a result, they had more difficulty falling asleep. So, it looks like counting sheep may not be the answer for people with sleep problems.

When falling asleep, it is likely to be more helpful to make the mind filled with something relaxing rather than active." You have to keep record of those sheep. It takes a lot of work to count them all up." said Michael Decker, Ph. D, you can try taking a bath to help fall asleep. You can also think about a quiet beach or a walk in the woods."^

Remember next time, no more sheep in your bed.
