A rich man was once riding along the road and saw an old man digging in his garden. On the ground lay a young tree, ready to be planted. The rich man called out to the old man, "What kind of tree are you planting there, my good man?"

"This is a fig (无花果) tree, Sir." he said.

"A fig tree?" the rich man was very surprised. "Why, how old are you, may I ask?"

"I am ninety years old."

"What!" cried the rich man. "You're ninety years old now. You are planting a very young tree now and it'll take years to give fruit. You may not live long enough to get the fruit from this tree."    The old man looked around the garden. Then he said with a smile, "Tell me, Sir. Did you eat figs when you were a boy?""Sure," the man did not know why he asked this question.  "Then tell me this," he said, "who planted the fig trees?" "Sorry, I don't know." "You see, Sir." went on the old man, "Our forefathers ( 祖 先 ) helped us plant trees to enjoy and I am doing the same for the people after me."

The rich man was quiet and said, "You are right, my good man. We should do some things for the people after us. Thank you very much." Then he rode away.

The giant pandas live high in the forest in the middle of China. There are large black patches(斑) around their eyes, over the ears and across their round bodies. Pandas need to eat a lot of bamboo. They spend about 12 to 16 hours a day eating their favourite food. Sometimes, pandas eat fruit or meat, but they only spent little time on them. 

Pandas are the national treasure(国宝) of China! People from all over the world love them. In the past, there were lots of pandas. Today, there are more than one thousand eight hundred pandas in the wild. So we need to do all in our hands to protect them.

An old tiger lives in the forest. He doesn't want to look for food. He often asks other animals to bring him something to eat. He sees a monkey and says, "I'm hungry, Monkey. Go to the village and bring me a fat pig." "Oh, Tiger," says the monkey. "I can't do that now. There is another tiger over there. He also wants a fat pig. He doesn't let me get anything for you to eat. I'm afraid of him." "What?" cries the old tiger. "Show me the tiger. I will talk to him." "Come with me," says the monkey, "Now look down at the river," says the monkey. "Can you see the head, the white teeth and the big green eyes of the tiger?" "Yes, I can," cries the old tiger. "I will eat him up." With these words, the tiger jumps into the water and dies(死亡).
