An early kind of music from Austria may not seem like music at all, but it is a kind of singing: yodeling. People use their voice to yodel, without using any instruments like violin or piano. At first, Austrian people used yodeling to call each other between mountains* or to call their animals. It was just a loud*sound without words, but it had different meanings, like "It's time for lunch." Or "I'm near here."

Yodeling developed* into songs in the 19th century. There were yodeling groups singing in theatres and music halls in Austria. Later, people tried to write down the songs. A musician called Toby Reiser traveled through Austria, listened to people yodeling and wrote down all he heard. In the 1930s, people around the world got to know yodeling. American country singer Jimmie Rodgers created "blue yodel" songs and made yodeling part of the country music. Today, people can even hear yodeling in rock music, and it is still loved in countries like Britain and America.

The singing of yodeling is special because it repeats* a high-low-high-low sound. Everyone can yodel. Yodeling is not about singing perfectly, but being loud. To try it, you can just find a room and sing "Little-old-lady-WHO!" Begin with "little old lady" in your chest voice*, and then jump up to your head voice to sing "who". You will soon know what it means to "feel the yodel".

Next time you are on a mountain top, try yodeling! It's a wonderful feeling and can bring you a lot of fun!

Several years ago, I started the experience of riding a bike. At first, I thought it was only a 1  ride. But as I built up strength, my friends encouraged me to try some longer 2 . The first one was a 150-mile journey. It was an activity to raise money to fight against cancer(癌症). 

When I signed my name, the 3  seemed great. But as the time for the ride came closer, I was not sure about myself. I didn't really want to 4  all those miles for two days. 

The ride began on a Sunday morning in the Georgia countryside, 5  for the first few hours I felt wonderful. This was just the 6  I had imagined. But by the end of the day, I felt tired. I was sure I'd have to 7 . 

As I topped the hill, the nice sunset 8  me going for a few minutes more. Then in the distance, I saw a rider riding very slowly. I 9  that the person looked different in some way, but I couldn't tell why. I tried my best to catch up. There she was, with a determined smile on her face, riding 10  but steadily(稳地) — she had only one leg. 

She caught 11  attention at that moment. I was uncertain about my body for a whole day. But now I knew it wasn't the body, but the 12  that would help me reach my goal. 

It rained all the 13  day. I kept on without complaining , although I 14  saw the one-legged biker again. And at the end of the day, still feeling 15 , I completed the 150-mile journey. 

 My elder sister, Isabel, is good at sports. She's a wonderful soccer {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . I wanted to play on Isabel's team. So I practiced hard with my dad. He taught me {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to play the ball. We didn't tell Isabel because we wanted to surprise her. We kept {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a secret. 

 One day Isabel came home from soccer practice. She was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} about the next day's game. "Our best player can't come, " Isabel told Dad. 

I knew this was my big chance! The next day, I went to the practice {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the game. "Can I join you?" I asked the teacher. She looked a little surprised {#blank#}6{#/blank#} she handed me a red shirt, "Practice during the warm-up. You' ll play on the red {#blank#}7{#/blank#} , and Isabel is on the blue team. "

 The warm-up started. I took the ball down the field. Isabel tried to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} me. I ran past her with the ball. I took the ball back very fast. I scored a goal!"Wow! It's a big surprise, " said Isabel. Soon the game started. Our team pulled together, and we {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the game!

 After the game, Isabel looked excited. "We have another player in the family! Now we can play {#blank#}10{#/blank#} . " Chances are given to everyone who is prepared. 

South Korean Vacation

Last Monday, Soobin got a surprise text message from Klara. She is Soobin's German online friend, She was visiting Seoul (首尔) with her family!

Soobin replied. Soobin waited for Klara's reply and thought of things to do.

Welcome! I'm excited to introduce you to Korean culture.

Sounds great! But we're visiting a folk village today and going to watch pansori tomorrow.

Soobin was a little disappointed. She was also thinking of folk villages and pansori. Klara texted again.

How about Wednesday? There is a han'i class in [nsadong.

Wanna come?

Soobin smiled. She was about to suggest Insadong. The class was fun.

At lunch, Soobin suggested a bulgogi restaurant.

"I'll introduce you to Korean food!" "Thanks, but we already have plans to eat Buddhist (佛教) temple (寺) food,"  Klara said. "And we have bulgogi restaurants at home."

Soobin laughed. "I guess they're introducing themselves to Korean culture," she thought.
