Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.

I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner's dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, "Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes." So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the "real" firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

Here, I would offer this reminder: don't wait. Don't wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody's life. If you have something to give, give it now.

Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody's life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

Yan Mingyou is 93 years old, but he still works as a music teacher in Anhui.

Yan is from a small town of Anhui. He has worked as a rural (乡村的) music teacher for about 40 years. When he reached the age of 60, he retired. But after he learned some rural schools were short of music teachers, he decided to go on teaching. "I usually have six music classes at a school and five classes at another school every week," he said. To make his classes more interesting, Yan started to learn to play the piano when he was 77 years old. At the age of 80, Yan felt he was too old to teach music. However, the children wanted him to stay. "Students wanted me to teach music, so I would go on teaching," Yan said.

Yan often uses some of his money to help students in need. Liu Dandan is one of the students he has helped. About 10 years ago, Liu, a student in Grade 5, had to stop getting an education because her family didn't have enough money. When Yan heard about that, he helped the girl. "I just try my best to help children in need," he said.

"I'm happy to teach music," Yan said. "For rural children, music is a way to help them make their dreams come true."

Haman Bekele, now 14, moved to Virginia, the US when he was 4 years old. But he still cares about his birthplace: Ethiopia(埃塞俄比亚).

"Skin cancer(皮肤癌) is a big problem in developing countries," Bekele told USA Today. But it's expensive for people to treat it. That made Bekele feel sad. He wanted to find a better way. So Bekele learned about skin cancer. He learned that dendritic cells(树突细胞) help protect skin. Then he made skin cancer-treating soap with the cells. Doing it taught him how important it is not to give up, Bekele said. One big challenge was to make sure the soap didn't break into pieces. He tried many different ways. Finally, he succeeded. 

"It was so difficult to get a bar of soap to not just melt immediately(立即融化掉)," Bekele said, adding that he tried many different ways. "Keeping trying is a very important part of the scientific process."

Bekele's invention won him 25,000 dollars (about 178,000 yuan) as prize money in the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It's a competition in the US that encourages kids to think of new ways to solve everyday problems. "I'm going to use this prize money to continue research within the science field," Bekele told NPR.

Once, three fish lived in a pond. One evening, some fishermen passed by the pond and saw the fish. "This pond is full of fish," they told each other excitedly. "We have never fished here before. We must come back tomorrow morning with our nets and catch these fish!" So saying, the fishermen left.

When the eldest of the three fish heard this, he was afraid. He called the other fish together and said, "Did you hear what the fishermen said? We must leave this pond at once. The fishermen will return tomorrow and kill us all!"

The second of the three fish agreed. "You are right," he said. "We must leave the pond."

But the youngest of the three fish laughed. "You are worrying without reason," he said. "We have lived in this pond all our lives, and no fisherman has ever come here. Why should these men return? I'm not going anywhere—my luck will keep me safe."

The eldest of the three fish left the pond that evening with his entire family. The second fish saw the fishermen coming in the distance early next morning and left the pond at once with all his family. The third fish refused to leave even then.

The fishermen arrived and caught all the fish left in the pond, including the third fish's luck.

I had a trip to Aruba on my vacation. We 1 the Holiday Hotel in Aruba at about 1:30 a. m. We were pretty glad 2 it was our first trip to Aruba. The flight （飞行） was fine and the bus ride from the 3 was great. We stayed at the Holiday Hotel. We saw the rooms one 4 one because we wanted to have a room to 5 the sea（海洋）. 

I would say that the beach was 6 but the weather was awful every day. 7 the Holiday Hotel, it was okay with us. The room was clean. The waiters were friendly and the food was good. I 8 the food of the hotel restaurant. One night we had 9 at the Moomba Restaurant. It is on the third floor. The food there was really good. The Moomba was a good place to 10 . I hoped to go there again.
