I have always had a love for traveling abroad. Last year, I took a trip to London alone. Those nights,I stayed in a youth hostel(青年旅社). For me,hostels are places where I can meet and talk to different people. It is great fun for me. During the stay in the hostel, I met two girls, one from Brazil and the other from Slovakia. We three had very happy talks together. We shared our personal travel stories and the interesting people we met with one another. The girl from Brazil was actually a lawyer(律师). 她帮助人们解决他们的家庭问题。 She was taking a trip to Europe all by herself. The girl from Slovakia had much interest in photography(摄影). Because I was also a photography fan, we ended up talking all night and sharing experience in using a camera.

The best part is that they both became close friends of mine. Even now, sometimes we still talk with each other online. Last month, I got some photos from the Brazilian girl. To my surprise, she had a baby daughter and they were laughing happily in the photos. I was so happy for her. And it's such a great thing to know that there are people remembering you from far away. Though you may just meet each other for a few hours, you have someone caring about you in the other side of the world. And I think that is the most amazing part of traveling. So if you have free time, maybe you can try to travel abroad to relax yourself as I do.

Can knots be a form of art? It is in China. It is used for decoration (装饰) on clothing or to hang on a wall. Skilled knot artists make knots that you might see sold in stores that you can take back with you.

What Is a Chinese Knot?

A Chinese knot is a knot that is tied and woven (编织) from a single length of rope to be different shapes. Most knots have two cords (粗线) entering the knot from the top and two leaving from the bottom. Each kind of knot is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries.

Knot artists can use different colors, but they prefer deep red ones. The color red means good luck in China.

 ▲

At first, people may have made them to record information before people started to write. One hundred thousand year old tools have been discovered that were probably used to tie and untie knots.

It is known that they were used for artistic decoration and to express thoughts and feelings in the Tang Dynasty (618—907). The traditional art form was carried on by people as part of their culture.

Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots

Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families. For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love. The "true love knot" and the "double happiness knot" are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together.

Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing. They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B 、C 和 D)中选出最佳选项。

Traditional clothing plays an important role in any country's history and culture. In China, when it comes to traditional clothing, hanfu, qipao and the Chinese tunic suit are the most popular. However, most Chinese people are unclear about them. Here is some information about these three kinds of clothing.

Traditional hanfu

Hanfu was created for Han people in the beginning. It shows the Chinese mind. Its colour, its style and even the length are about Chinese culture.

Hanfu first appeared in the Shang dynasty, over 3, 000 years ago. It was popular for a long time in Chinese history from the Qin dynasty to the Ming dynasty. At the beginning of the Qing dynasty, however, it lost its popularity. With growing calls for reviving (复兴) traditional Chinese culture, many Chinese people have taken a liking to hanfu nowadays.

Qipao

Qipao, also known as the Cheongsam, appeared in the 1920s and remained as the "national clothing" until the 1950s. At first, people made it wide and loose, covering most parts of the body. Yet it was not beautiful and people wanted a more beautiful kind of clothing. So in the 1930s, people made the traditional qipao tight (紧的) to show the beauty of a woman's body. Now, lots of women still like to wear it.

The Chinese tunic suit

It is also called the "Sun Yat-sen suit", because it was named after Sun Yat-sen, a famous person in Chinese history. It looked simple but good, so it quickly became popular among Chinese men in the mid-20th century. Although other kinds of clothing have replaced it, leaders of China still wear it when going to important events.
