As many as 110 middle and high school students from more than 90 countries and regions(地区) took part in the 16th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for ForeignSecondary School Students. The competition ran from Oct 16th to Oct 30th in Beijing and Yunnan last year. In it, they took cultural trips and answered questions about Chinese characters(汉字) and Chinese culture.

Attracted by Chinese dramas

Folke Borgstorm is an 18-year-old from Sweden. When he visited Beijing for the competition, he bought a jade necklace(玉石项链). Borgstorm said he knew about jade from a Chinese TV show. "A main character in the TV show wears jade and it makes him look cool. Jade can have many colors like green, red and white," said Borgstrom. He became interested in it and started to learn more about it.

Botgstorm also enjoyed watching popular short dramas. "Most Sweden TV shows tell of boring everyday life," he said. "But Chinese shows have interesting stories."

Amazed by a Chinese host

Many of the students hoped to learn more about Chinese culture on the trip, but Ai Akasaki, from Japan, wanted to meet her idol, Sa Beining. Sa is a well-known host in China. The 16-year-old girl watches the Spring Festival Gala(春晚) every year and likes the funny Sa. "I also watched other shows Sa hosts, like Everlasting Classics(《经典咏流传》). In those beautiful songs, I found Chinese poetry is as beautiful as Japanese haiku(俳句)," said Ai.

Unluckily, she didn't meet Sa this time. But she wants to be a journalist(记者) in China and work with Sa one day.

My name is Luo Xiaowei. I am a teacher in a school in a small town. I came here when I was 22 years old. So far, 20 years has been gone.

People usually ask me what it is like to be a teacher? I think sometimes it can be hard and tiring, because kids are difficult. I have to teach them right from wrong patiently. But most of the time, I feel great to be a teacher. When the students make progress day by day, I am proud of them and myself. Last Monday, when I came back to my office after a lesson, a girl was waiting for me at the door. She is shy and hardly speaks in class. She took something out of her pocket and put it on my hand. Then she ran away. It was a candy with a piece of note saying: "Miss Luo, my mom came back yesterday and taught me to make the candy. You are the first one I want to share with." At that moment, all the tiredness (劳累) had been swept away. And that is why I stick to (坚持) being a teacher.

Theo works days, nights, and weekends in the tulip, fields in the Netherlands and never feels tired. How is this possible? Theo is an AI robot that looks fo sick flowers each spring. 

The work stops viruses（病毒）from spreading among the plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs（鳞茎） and kills them if necessary. They are removed （去除） from the healthy ones，in a processing center after the harvest. 

There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and the busiest season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers. 

This is the second season that Allan Visser has used a robot. He said it is very costly-the same as sports car-about $200, 000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness. "I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn't take out thesick tulips from our field, " he said "Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips. 

Erik de Jong, the manager of the company that makes the robots, said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program comes from tulip farmers—farmers like Theo van der Vourt. He is the farmer after whom the robot is named. 

Van der Vourt retired（退休）after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. ＂It＇s fantastic＂he said, "It sees just as much as I see. "

My uncle is an English teacher at a middle school in Shanghai. Both he and his classes are 1 among the students. Most of his students like English. Last month my uncle 2 his story of learning English with me.
