Secret to Happiness

There's a Chinese saying that goes "If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap (小睡). If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, become wealthy by chance. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}" Helping others by giving may be the secret to a happy, healthy life. The more you give, the more you'll gain. The key is to find a method that works for you. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Find your love. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}You might feel bad if you are doing something you don't like. You will feel great when you put your love into giving.

Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than money. People don't all have the same amount (数量) of money, but everyone as time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It can be just a few hours a day, or a few days a year.

Be active. Take every chance to serve your community. You are free to choose what you want to do. Make full use of services that match your values.

All in all, by proper giving, you can gain purpose, meaning and happiness—all of the things at people look for in life but are so hard to find.

I have changed a lot in the last few years.

"The best mianshilies in China and the best Chinese mianshilies in Shanxi." Can you imagine that in North China's Shanxi Province, there are over 280 kinds of mianshi, or cooked wheaten (小麦的) food?

Shanxi people's love for mianshiis closely connected to the local natural conditions. The dry weather on mountains and plateaus (高原) makes it a good place for growing wheat. Therefore, as time passing by, Shanxi people not only developed an eating habit for mianshi, but also invented different ways of cooking wheaten food.

Among the many Shanxi mianshi, the sliced (削的) noodle is the most famous one. It is a noodle made with a special knife. When making it, the cook needs to hold the dough (生面团) with one hand, while fast slicing the noodles into the soup pot with the other hand. The length and thickness of each sliced noodle are required to be the same. Experienced cooks can even turn the way of slicing noodle into an excellent show. They can slice 200 noodles in one minute, and make sure each noodle falls exactly into the soup pot 1.5 meters away.

In Chinese food culture, people like to give special meanings to the food. For example, they would have a bowl of Changshoumianon their birthdays, carrying good wishes for health and long life. In many places, the tradition is to serve jiaozito a person leaving home, and noodles to a person returning home, as both foods have their own important meanings.

Spring Festival couplets（春联） are written on red papers and stuck on the doors during the Spring Festival. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (stand) for people's wishes for a happier life in the coming year.

When I was young, the couplets were one of the most important {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (symbol) of the Spring Festival. Sticking couplets was always in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} first place on the to-do list. And my mother would ask me to take some gifts for people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} wrote couplets for us. When they were writing, I like to watch how people create these great works by {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (use) brushes.

Later when I was in the eighth grade, my parents expected me {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (learn) how to write couplets. When learning it, I became interested {#blank#}7{#/blank#} traditional culture. Every time our family paid visits to relatives during the Spring Festival, I would always look at their couplets.

Nowadays the couplets are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (wide) printed by machines. The traditional couplets gradually become fewer in the markets as a result. But the red paper and black words will never {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (forget). They are not only the couplets, but also carry {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (we) love for traditional culture.
