Until the beginning of July, there has been no rain in northern Italy for over 100 days. Add to that the high temperatures, and the locals get very dry conditions. This is the most serious dry spell（干旱期）for that area in the past 70 years. Because of this situation, the country's longest river, the Po, is drying up!

This is bad news for several different reasons. The fresh water of the Po provides drinking water for northern Italy. Besides, farmers in this area need the water of the Po to keep their crops growing. What's more, the flowing river water is used to create about half of the hydroelectric power（水力发电）for Italy. Its drying up means that more natural gas（天然气） will be used, which is bad for the environment.

There have been some interesting discoveries from this lack of rain, however. Between Florence and Milan, a long ship sunk （沉没）in 1943 appeared because of the low water levels of the river. Now many tourists and locals come to see this ship. A German tank has also appeared out of water near Mantua. At other places along the river, people can even walk on the sandy river bed. Although this may be interesting, people in Italy and around the world are hoping for the return of rain to refill the Po!

Warming temperatures and shorter winters might sound like the end of snow days. However, rising temperatures may actually cause snowstorms to drop more snow, says David Robinson. He is a professor at a university in New Jersey. He studies climate (气候) change. 

Temperature change is one of the greatest in Earth's climate change over a long period of time. It can happen naturally or because of human activities, such as burning gas and coal. Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other pollutants into the atmosphere (大气层) , which hold heat in the atmosphere, leading to warmer global temperatures over time. 

But how could warmer temperatures lead to more snow? "To get snow, you need moisture (水汽) and freezing temperatures (0℃ or less) ", says Robinson. Without moisture in the air, there is no precipitation (rain or snow) . Robinson says there are signs that snowstorms are becoming stronger. This is because of this connection between moisture and precipitation. 

"The warmer the air becomes, the more moisture it holds. So, if it's warming and still cold enough to snow, you can get more snow," Robinson says. 

Of the 10 biggest snowfalls in D. C. region, five happened in the past 25 years, according to the NWS. During that same time period, average winter temperatures in D. C. increased. In 1996, the average winter temperature was 1. 8℃. In 2020, it was 6℃. 

Weather experts suggest that rising temperatures may make winter shorter and less cold. But for now, the snow is still falling. One day, winter might not have any days below the freezing temperature. Once temperatures stay above freezing, snowstorms become rain. Until then, we might continue to see strong storms. 

According to Robinson, that time could come sooner than we think. He says, "When we look back, years from now, we may see that this was the breaking point. "

It's March 12th. Li Li and Lin Tao are digging on a hill not far from their school. In China, people across the country plant trees 1 on this day. 

The idea of planting trees was first put forward in 1911 by Sun Zhongshan, the great 2 in Chinese history. He said more trees were needed as a 3 against flood and drought(干旱). In 1915, April 5th was named as Tree Planting Day. Then in 1979, the day was 4 to March 12th to 5 the date on which Sun Zhongshan died. 

The Gobi(戈壁) Desert in the north of China was 6 every year. So in 1978, the government started a tree planting project to 7 the Gobi spreading. The government and local farmers have been planting millions of trees to build a great green "wall" along the edge of the desert. "Have you heard of the Green Wall of China? That's the biggest tree planting 8 of all." says Li Li. 

"Tree planting has become a tradition in China now." says Lin Tao, "Almost everyone does it on March 12th. Many people also plant a tree on a 9 day. My parents planted a tree when I started school. And my cousin planted 10 on his wedding day. We do it for the environment and for ourselves."

Scientists say that hobbies can make kids cleverer, healthier and even more successful when they grow up. How?

When you have a hobby, you learn new things. You have to read instructions (说明书). You look at websites, magazines and books to get more information about your hobby. More reading makes you a better reader and a better learner.

People with hobbies learn how to make goals and solve problems. Learning these skills when you are young can help you when you grow up. For some kids, having a hobby can be the first step to find a better job in the future.
