Dear August,

Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will become. When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world in which we hoped she, and now you, will grow up-a world with better education, fewer health problems, stronger communities, and a greater society. We wrote that with all the improvement in science and technology, your generation(一代) should live much better lives than ours. Even though headlines (头条) are often about what's wrong, we still believe these hopeful wishes will win out, and we have duties to do our part to make that happen. We're optimists(乐观主义者) about your generation and the future.

But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about the childhood. The world can be a serious place. That's why it's important to make time to go outside and play. You will be busy when you are older, so I hope you take time to smell all the flowers and collect all the leaves you like in your basket. I hope you read your favorite Dr. Seuss' books now and then before you start inventing your own stories about the Vipper of Vipp. I hope you ride the carousel(旋转木马) with Max until you've tried every color horse. I hope you run as much as you want around our living room and yard. And then I hope you take a lot of naps to be a great sleeper. And I hope even in your dreams you can feel how much we love you.

Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once,  ▲ . You've got us for that, and we'll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation.

August, we love you so much and we're so excited to be with you. We wish you a life of happiness, love and the same hope you give us.

Some volunteers in Egypt（埃及） are teaching the children of refugee(难民 ){#blank#}1{#/blank#} from many African countries.

Chris Rupke teaches at the African Hope School in Ma'adi,{#blank#}2{#/blank#} town near Cairo. Rupke says that some of the children he teaches{#blank#}3{#/blank#}one or both of their parents. Rupke adds that one boy was so badly influenced {#blank#}4{#/blank#}his experience that he was unable to speak. Then, a psychologist（心理学家） at the school got him to draw pictures of everything that had happened before.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}, after {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the pictures and working with the psychologist, the boy started to talk. Now, the boy is much {#blank#}7{#/blank#} than before.

Teacher Jean-Pie has worked at the African Hope School {#blank#}8{#/blank#} 2003.

Jean-Pie said that when he began, he met 6 refugee children under Cairo's bridges and in its public gardens. He tried his best{#blank#}9{#/blank#} them to come to school. At the refugee schools, most classesare taught in English. The students learn Maths, Arabic, Science, etc.

All the teachers there are nice and responsible（有责任感的）. They hope what they have done can really make a big{#blank#}10{#/blank#}to those refugee children.

A relaxing walk along the Beijing Central Axis （中轴线），from the Drum Tower to the Palace Museum ﹣this was Zhao Xianghan's first citywalk in 2022. Since then，Zhao has been crazy about the citywalk and believes it is the best way to lear about a city. 

"I visited Beijing before the start of my college life here，but I went there with a guide group. Taking photos of places of interest was a big thing. The crowded places made me think that Beijing was noisy，" said Zhao. "Yet now a citywalk allows me to see a whole different side of Beijing，"Zhao added. 

Zhao travelled in Wuhan and Hangzhou last month through citywalk tours. "Citywalk is all about doing whatever you want in your own traveling. And I enjoyed it so much，" said Zhao.

Today, I am going to start work in the plant. The working time starts at a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(一刻钟) past seven. 

I work in {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(工场) 1001 in the Leaf. My main job is to {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(收集) sunlight and CO₂ during the day. And workers from the Root will {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(送出) up water, and the water will {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(上升) up to the Leaf through the Stem. Then, workers in the Leaf will {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(混合) water, CO₂ and sunlight. Finally, they will produce some {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(生成物). One is sugar. It helps the plant grow. Another is {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(氧). It is useful for animals and humans because they need it to breathe. 

Every day, I work hard until it gets {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(黑暗的). After a night's rest, I begin to work hard again the next day. I am trying my best to make plants grow well and make the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(自然的) world better and better. 

Alice is my good friend. She is twelve. Her birthday is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} October,2nd. She has seven subjects(科目) at school, and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (she) favorite （最喜欢的）subject is math. She likes math very much. She likes sports very much, too. She plays basketball{#blank#}3{#/blank#} her father every morning. Her father plays basketball{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(good).

Alice has good{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (eat) habits（习惯）. For breakfast, she likes eggs, bread and some milk. For lunch, she {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (have) chicken, rice and vegetables. For dinner, she has some fruit and bread. She eats apples, bananas and two{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (tomato). She likes hamburgers,{#blank#}8{#/blank#}she doesn't eat them. She thinks they are not good for her. 

Alice eats well and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (play) sports every day, so she is very {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(health).

Alena is from Texas. She dreamed of becoming an engineer at the age of 16 when she was 12 years old. It may sound impossible, but Alena is not a common girl. She's both clever and hard-working. She is now studying engineering at her dream university. She would love to build a rover (探测器) to go to space. 

Believe it or not, the story started with Lego (乐高) . At the age of4, Alena loved playing around with different kinds of Lego and showed great love for building things. Little Alena loved to look at the stars at night. Once, she said seriously, "Mom, I'm going to work for NASA. I'm going to travel to space in a rocket. " Her mom was surprised at the little girl's dream. She couldn't believe what she heard. 

Alena is planning to write a book for children. "I' d like to ask more girls to follow their dreams, " she said. 

Alena won't let anything stop her working hard for her dreams. "When I plan to do something, I just go for it, " she said.
