An old farmer lived with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was always up early to read. One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! What good does reading do?"

Grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket to the river and bring me back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out(漏出) before he got back home. Grandpa laughed, "You'll have to move a little faster next time." This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place. It was an impossible task.

The old man said, "You're just not trying hard enough." So the boy tried a third time and failed. He said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless? Look at the basket."

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had turned from a dirty coal basket into a clean one inside and outside.

"You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read, you will be changed, inside and outside."

A boy was sick and tired of going to school every day while his mother stayed at home. He wanted 1 to see what he did. He prayed (祷告) one day,"I go to school every day and study hard for eight hours 2 my mother does nothing at home. She needs to know what I do every day, so please switch (交换) our 3 ."

The boy was surprised to wake up 4 a woman one day. He got out of bed, cooked for his family, woke up the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches and drove them to school. After he came back home, he took the clothes that 5 dry cleaning to the cleaners and went out to the bank. He wanted to take out some 6 and buy something. Then he went shopping 7 because he had to return home as soon as possible.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} 8 , he couldn't rest after getting home. He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog. By then it was already 1:00 in the afternoon. He 9 to finish other chores. When he finished everything, he drove to school to 10 the kids. He brought them home, helped them with their homework and then 11 into the kitchen. There was a lot of work waiting for him.

At 4:30 p. m., he began peeling (削皮) potatoes and washing greens for salad, heating pork and boiling some fresh beans for 12 . After dinner, he cleaned the kitchen, did the dishes, folded the clothes, bathed the kids and put them to 13 .By 9:00 p. m. he was already very 14 and couldn't wait to go to bed himself.

"I was so 15 to envy (嫉妒) my mother. Oh please! Let us trade back. I will understand my mother much more after a day in her shoes."The boy prayed and soon fell asleep.

At the 17th Paralympic Games(残奥会) in Paris, Liu Yu, a 35- year- old disabled swimmer, was1 after winning the third place in the women's backstroke 50m(女子50米仰泳).

Liu was born with illness and couldn'2 . She had to use a wheelchair and stayed in a children's hospital.3 , the elder kids in the hospital cared for this young girl. Like her 4 , they taught her to be strong.

At the age of 15, Liu had the chance to learn how to swim and showed her talent in the pool." I loved the feelings of 5 and was not scared at all. It was so wonderful to move 6 without having to use legs."

Staying 7 is the key to her success."I was 24 years old then and it was so tiring to stay in the water six hours a day. But I never 8 and finally made it."

In 2019, she was 9 by the National Team. This year, she won a bronze medal(铜牌).

" Although it's my last Paralympic Games, I'm happy with this result." said Liu."I want to tell people that no matter what happened to you, never10 and you will finally succeed!"

What a bad experience I had! Now I should have flown d{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to London for an important meeting. But I'll have to be absent from it b {#blank#}2{#/blank#} of my own mistake. 

Yesterday evening, some of my old classmates came to visit me. We were so e{#blank#}3{#/blank#} that we all drank so much. When I got home, it was already 2 am and I went to bed without taking off my j {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Of course, I didn't set my clock either. 

This morning, I didn't wake up until the doorbell r{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. It was Mrs Smith, one of my neighbours. She came to borrow my floor cleaner. When I looked at the clock, it was a{#blank#}6{#/blank#} 11:30 am. How terrible! I had missed my f{#blank#}7{#/blank#}. Anyway, I had to go to the company to tell the manager what had happened. He was so m {#blank#}8{#/blank#} at me. And then he shouted, "If you don't give up the bad habit of drinking, you'll never s {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. "

How s{#blank#}10{#/blank#} I was! I think I will never drink again. 

 Billy always loved blueberries. They were his favorite fruit. Today he was going to make juice with his uncle. His uncle liked to make juice out of everything. He made carrot juice, apple juice, vegetable juice, and more juices. He had never made blueberry juice before though!

 First, Billy and his uncle went to a blueberry farm. They were each given a basket. They picked for an hour and got several pounds. It was hard work picking the little berries from the trees. Now Billy understood why they were expensive in the store. 

 Next, they had to wash the fruit. Some of them still had leaves. Those had to be pulled off. Then the bad berries had to be thrown away. They washed the berries and made them air-dry. 

 After that, they pushed the blueberries through a strainer (过滤器). The strainer caught most of the seeds and skins, and only left a small glass of dark purple juice to them. 

 When they tasted the juice, it wasn't very sweet. Billy's uncle didn't want to add white sugar (糖) to the juice. It was better to use a naturally sweet juice, like apple juice, pear juice, or grape juice. They use grape juice as a sweetener, because grapes had a similar color to the blueberries. 

 Finally, they could drink it. It was a lot of work to make juice, but it sure was refreshing!

 Thanks to China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy (过境免签政策),  34-year-old Julia went back to Guangzhou last month. She visited Guangzhou10 years ago.

 From December 5 to 17, 2024, Julia traveled from Russia to Asia to spend the winter holiday. Her first stop was Guangzhou. After Julia and her friends arrived in Guangzhou, they had their first surprise: the Guangzhou subway app (应用程序).     ▲     She had to look at maps to find out her way. "The app is really helpful. It's so easy to travel by subway here," said Julia. "We don't need to worry about getting lost. There are always friendly workers ready to help, though they don't speak much English."

 When Julia walked on Shangxiajiu Street at night, she was surprised by how modern the city was. "I feel like being in the future. We can see all the high buildings and electric (电动的) cars everywhere," she said. Ten years ago, there were much fewer high buildings or cars on the road.

"I feel very safe, though it is late at night," said Julia, "It was wonderful to go out at night!" So she spent lots of time trying different kinds of night market food. How delicious!

 Julia had great fun in Guangzhou. Now she is planning her next trip to visit other Chinese cities. "I' ll get to experience more of this beautiful country soon!"
