Abingdon School Open Day

    The Open Day this year will be on Saturday, 1 October 2011. The Open Day is for all the family, with activities and displays(展示) about all aspects(方面) of the school. All the teachers, students and parents will attend. The day starts at 9:30 a. m. and finishes at 2:30 p.m.  You are welcome to arrive at any time during the lessons in the morning and afternoon. Please read the outline of Open Day events.

    If you can't come to the Open Day, that's all right. There are many other chances(机会) to visit Abingdon School

    St Helen School and St Katharine School Open Day will be on the same date, so you can also visit those two.

    Parking at the school on the Open Day may be limited(有限的), so you can also park your cars in Lotus Supermarket's car park.  It's just a three-minute walk away.

    There are many kinds of trees. All trees have roots. The roots hold trees in the ground. The roots soak up ( 吸收 ) water and food. Then trees get water and food from the roots. You can't see inside a tree. But you can study how water moves through trees.

    First, get a stalk ( 茎 ) of celery ( 芹菜 ) and cut off its end. Put red colour in a cup of water. Then put the stalk of the celery into the red water. Then we can see the red water moving up in the celery easily.

    After half an hour, take the celery out. Cut it in half. Your celery should be red. This is because the water moved up the stalk. Water moves through trees in the same way as it moved through the celery.

Western people celebrate Halloween on 31" October. Here are some things about it.

Pumpkin(南瓜) lanterns

These are pumpkins with a nose, two eyes and a mouth. There is a candle in the empty pumpkin and the light creates a scary face. They are easier to cut and you can buy them in supermarkets. People use pumpkin lanterns to decorate their houses on Halloween.

Dressing up

People of all ages dress up on Halloween. They wear scary clothes. You can buy the clothes from a shop or you can make your own clothes at home. It's easy to make ghost clothes from an old white shirt or wear black clothes to look like a witch(女巫).

Trick or treat

Children dress up and visit the houses in their neighbourhood to play" trick or treat". The neighbour gives them sweets as a" treat". If there is no treat, the children play a trick. Some people think that playing tricks is unkind but luckily there is nearly always a treat!

The Spring Festival is a traditional festival in China. During the festival, Chinese people have many activities. They paste Spring Festival couplets（贴春联）, greeting the New Year and saying goodbye{#blank#}1{#/blank#} the old year. On the first day of the Spring Festival, people hang out, wearing new clothes. Nowadays, children get red packets from their parents and their {#blank#}2{#/blank#} by WeChat. It is a good time for people to visit relatives and friends. More importantly, the Spring Festival is celebrated not only in China but also in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} parts of the world.

The Spring Festival has become a key time for Chinese living in the US. They join in a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} evening party to welcome the traditional New Year. The Chinese New Year will be welcomed with three weeks of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}across Australia. Thousands of people come to Sydney's Chinatown. They enjoy fireworks and lion dances. The family dinner on New Year's Eve is an important tradition for Chinese {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they were born in Singapore or moved there from China. They usually hold it at home.

To stay safe, never give your personal information online, such as your address or the name of your school.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Don't tell your friends your passwords.

Show respect

Just like in real life, it's important to behave well online. For example, if you want to post a photo of someone, make sure you ask for their permission first.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} It's OK to disagree, but always be polite!

Be kind

Before you post a comment online, stop and think. Is it positive (积极的)? How will your words make someone feel? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Never post nasty messages.

Be careful

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Remember that people online are not always who they say they are. Never open emails from strangers, click on strange links or download apps without asking an adult. They could contain viruses. If you' re not sure, ask your parents or teacher!

Spending time and learning online can be great if we' re good digital citizens. So, be safe, be responsible and have fun!
