Mary likesto run. Ever since she was in the third grade, she has been training to runlong distances. Now that she was in her eighth grade, her parents agreed to lether run in the Banana Classic. The Banana Classic is a ten-kilometre race. Ittakes place every year in Mattydale. The winners get a lifetime supply (提供) of peanuts and fruit juice.

    Marypractised by running ten kilometres, twice every day. On the average (平时的) run, she would finish inthirty minutes. Last year's winner finished the race in twenty-six minutes andten seconds!

    On the dayof the race, Mary ran faster than she ever had in the past. As she came acrossthe last kilometre, she was in the fourth place. She picked up the pace (步伐) and quickly reached the secondplace, just as she could see the finishing line. She ran as fast as she couldin a mad dash (冲刺) to the finish line, but she justwasn't fast enough to get ahead of the leader.

Everyone is good at something, but some people are truly talented. Last week we had an {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (interest) talent show in our school. There were many wonderful{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (performer) from different classes and even some teachers in that show.

Most of the students thought the best performer was Eliza, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she played the piano the most beautifully and she is an excellent piano player. Who was the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (funny)? Of course Steve was. You could see that he and his dog sang the song together and everyone couldn't stop laughing. Do you want {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (know) the most creative one? It must be Vera. She {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (play) the guitar upside down. The most popular actors were the math teachers in the show. They had many kinds {#blank#}7{#/blank#} instruments (乐器) and they were the loudest of all. However, there was also{#blank#}8{#/blank#} terrible show. Dennis always kept dropping the balls everywhere.

All in all, I think it is fun to watch this kind of show if you don't take them too {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (serious). And they also give students a good way to show {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (they) talents.

27- year- old Pei Haozheng is skilled in creating artworks by using paper. In his eyes, a single piece of paper can make a big difference. He can fold it into anything, from daily objects to ancient people. 

Born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, Pei started folding paper when he was a little kid, because paper was cheap and easy to get. At first, he learned folding from his friends and parents, and later he copied the style from books. From cranes to planes, he was fascinated by（着迷于） the magic world made by paper. Every day, he spent hours folding paper. 

In order to improve his folding skills, Pei taught himself through origami（折纸工艺） books. As the number of his works grew, so did the quality. His hard work paid off（得到回报） and then Pei began to create more complex（复杂的） designs. 

Pei won the International Origami Internet Olympiad in 2017, combining the art with Chinese cultural ideas. For the event's final task, he folded an ancient Chinese woman holding a mirror from a piece of hand made xuanzhi, a kind of rice paper. The artwork caught the judges'（裁判的） eye with its special shape and Eastern style. In September2022, Pei even set the Guinness World Record for most origami flowers made from a single piece of paper. 

Although people might be amazed at the complexity of the designs and skills needed to produce the artworks, Pei is always willing to keep trying new artworks. He said, "I get inspiration from Chinese culture and of course, I want to help Chinese culture go global（走向世界）. "

We may have many difficulties in life, and sometimes it's even unfair for someone, but it depends on how you face them. Sally is a student from a university, she made a 1 last August. She decided to take her grandmother 2 their hometown and live with her in a rented room（出租房）near her school. Sally's family have met a lot in the past few years. Her grandmother 3 her legs and she could walk only with a stick. Her father died because of illness. Sally's mother was plagued （受折磨）by these events, she lost the4 to take care of others, "This was the only choice. No one else could 5  my grandma, " Sally explained. Her grandmother has also had a6  life. The old woman's three sons have all died, and Sally couldn't leave her alone where7  could look after her. A room with two beds, a desk and a table is their new home. The room8 her several hundred yuan every month. In order to make money, Sally works in a supermarket after class and spends the money9  the family. "I was brought up by my grandma, and now it's my10  to take care of her, " said Sally. When she was young, her grandmother "magically" prepared every meal on time for her every day, 11  she could not read a clock. In the eyes of Sally's teacher, the girl is a (n)12 student. " Though taking care of her grandmother takes her lots of13 , Sally has tried to stay on top of all her courses. She is 14  preparing for an English singing contest, " her teacher said. Sally even 15 help from others. "It's kind of like only getting without giving, " she explained. At present, the girl is able to support(支持，支撑) the home with her weak shoulder.
