Some people ski(滑雪) down mountains. Others climb huge rocks. Why do people enjoy risky(有危险的) activities like these?

Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. Psychologists(心理学家) say that this kind of explorers(探险者) are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something risky, a chemical(化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it more.

Other people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal. Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000-mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there. Fay's journey helped create 13national parks.

For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员), taking risks is part of their job. Psychologists say extreme athletes see the world differently. Not like most people, extreme athletes feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Rahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.

Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However, we still take risks in our lives. Some of us take social risks, such as speaking in front of a large group of people. Sometimes, we take financial risks, such as buying a house. And sometimes we take career risks, such as leaving a job or starting a business. Most people take risks in some areas of life, but not in others. What kind of risk-taker are you?

My sister and I are very different.When people meet us both, they are always surprised to learn that we are sisters. This is because we don't look like each other, we have different personalities（性格），and our lifestyles are different.

Do you resemble your brother or sister? My sister and I don't resemble each other at all.I am tall, but she is very short. I have short dark brown hair and green eyes.She has long blonde hair and blue eyes. I am strong, but she is not. I have big hands and feet; her feet and hands are very small.

When we were kids, she was thin, but I was heavy.Now we're both heavy.

We also have opposite personalities.She is always stressed out. I am calmer and more out—going.She is very worried about what other people think and say about her, but I really don't care. When she has a problem, she just worries about it, but when I have a problem, I try to fix（解决）it.She easily gets angry， especially with our mother. But I—am more patient.

Our lifestyles are very different. I love old things and hardly ever go shopping.But she goes shopping twice or more a week. I have cats.She has a dog. I read.She watches TV.

When Emily Cummins was a teenager, her grandfather had an illness — a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste(牙膏) out of the tube(管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器). 

A few years later, Emily learnt that some African countries are short of water. The women and children there often walk many kilometres a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets(桶) on their heads. They have to walk carefully so as not to waste the water. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets of water each time. 

Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it. 

Emily has already won several prizes for her inventions and was named one of the world's top ten young people. And Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place. 

Moving to a new school can be difficult. Here are some good ways to help you to fit in（融入）. 

Enjoy a day at school. 

You won't fit in at school if you don't know the school well. Ask for a school map. Try to get to know every corner of your new school in a day. A good school handbook（手册）can also help you. But to make it easy, ask the people near you where the place is—tell people that you are new when you need help. 

Be nice to everyone. 

Be nice to everyone, the young or the old, because they may be your new teacher or new friend. 

Make friends. 

Talk to different people. This is your school now. Doing sports, reading books, or studying together can help you make more friends. 

Be yourself and be polite(有礼貌的). 

You will be happy if people love you, and not happy if people don't like you. Don't worry. Be true, be yourself, and be polite to everyone. Sometimes they don't get to know you much. Sometimes they may say bad words to you. When they know you more, they will like you. 

 Wang Yan is a student at Northeastern University(东北大学) in Shenyang. She likes to spend her weekends exploring the narrow streets of the city. She is especially looking for unknown bookstores. In these bookstores, she can relax and read. "Each store is special," she said. "We can enjoy the beauty of the city and read a good book."

 Since the beginning of this year, "City Read" has become a popular topic. Many young people share their favourite bookstores and talk about their experiences of finding"reading freedom" near home.

 In Shenyang, there are many private bookstores hidden away in the small streets. Some are quite famous. The 101-year-old Gede Bookstore has a grand style. Whoop Book & Cafe, a former boiler room(锅炉房), suggests new books every week. And at the When Paper Talk Bookstore, new books are never sealed (塑封).

"These bookstores are very close to my place. They feel like home. I love sitting there. It's just wonderful," said Zhang Qi from Shenyang.

 In Beijing, 24-hour libraries are very popular. Their convenient locations and all-day service attract many young people.

"City Read" has become popular because public(公共的) facilities are much better than before. In Shenyang, for example, old buildings have been turned into cultural spaces. Across China, "10-and 15-minute reading circles" are being set up to improve public reading facilities.
