Some people ski(滑雪) down mountains. Others climb huge rocks. Why do people enjoy risky(有危险的) activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. Psychologists(心理学家) say that this kind of explorers(探险者) are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something risky, a chemical(化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it more.
Other people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal. Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000-mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there. Fay's journey helped create 13national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员), taking risks is part of their job. Psychologists say extreme athletes see the world differently. Not like most people, extreme athletes feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Rahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However, we still take risks in our lives. Some of us take social risks, such as speaking in front of a large group of people. Sometimes, we take financial risks, such as buying a house. And sometimes we take career risks, such as leaving a job or starting a business. Most people take risks in some areas of life, but not in others. What kind of risk-taker are you?
From small ants to big whales, almost all animals need to sleep. Some sleep a little. Some sleep a lot. And some have special ways to get their sleep.
Seabirds | Some seabirds spend most of their lives over the ocean. And they can sleep while they are flying. They can fly for many hours without moving their wings. |
Flamingos | A flamingo can sleep while standing on one leg. The standing leg always stays straight. The other leg stays close to its body. Its head rests on its back. |
Horses | Horses often sleep standing up. If a horse lies down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing. And horses only need about three hours of sleep a day! |
Giraffes | Giraffes win the prize(奖) for sleeping the least. They sleep about 30 minutes a day, and 5 minutes at a time. They lie down when they sleep. They rest their heads on their bodies or on the ground. What a strange way of sleeping! |
Dolphins | A dolphin sleeps with just half its head at a time. The other half must stay awake(醒着的) to take in air and to watch for danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go without sleep for as long as two months to stay safe. |
