短文续写

I inhaled deeply, expelling the breath against the rear window of the vehicle, and with a finger, I etched the word 'DREADFUL' into the misty surface of the glass, creating a temporary inscription that mirrored my inner turmoil.

My father, casting a brief glance in my direction through the reflective surface of the rearview mirror, offered a comforting remark, "Alex, this journey presents itself as an auspicious occasion for you to reconnect with your maternal and paternal elders."

The vehicle made a deliberate turn onto a well-trodden dirt path, one that I recognized all too well. We were progressively distancing ourselves from the urban confines, moving further away from the digital tendrils of the Internet, and even more so from the stimulating environment of the computer camp.

"Brighten up, Alex!" exclaimed my mother, her voice carrying a note of optimism. "There is every likelihood that another opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of coding will arise shortly, perhaps even within this very summer season."

As the car continued its journey, I was acutely aware that all my companions in the realm of programming would be engaged in the act of coding at the computer camp this week, while I, on the other hand, was to be ensconced in the rural setting of a farm. I uttered not a single syllable, and in due course, the vehicle came to a halt in the driveway of my grandparents' abode. A slender row of trees materialized into view, their presence a stark contrast to the urban landscape I was leaving behind.

I had once taken pleasure in visiting the farm during the spring intermissions before my immersion into coding camps... and before the realization of the extent to which my actions could lead to chaos and disorder.

The engine of the car had not yet ceased its hum when my grandmother, with an agility that belied her years, sprang towards us. From my vantage point in the backseat, I observed as my father and mother embraced my grandmother. I, in turn, reluctantly extracted myself from the vehicle, feeling as though the very force of gravity had grown unusually intense.

"You both are certainly deserving of a respite," my grandmother was saying, her words directed towards my parents. "Alex will be in good stead—he has always held a fondness for the farm." She spoke in the past tense, implying that Alex had once cherished the farm.

During the midday meal, my grandmother inquired, "Why such a somber countenance, Alex?" I maintained my silence. Why indeed? It seemed as though they were acting in ignorance of the events that had transpired during my previous visit. For a fleeting moment, my gaze met with my grandmother's. Could I muster the courage to question her regarding the goats' destruction of all the flora belonging to our neighbor, Mr. Jackson, an incident that occurred because I had inadvertently lifted the latch and allowed the goats to roam free? Was Mr. Jackson still seething with anger towards me for the considerable damage I had inadvertently caused him?

"I am quite alright," I muttered, my voice barely audible. "It is merely the absence of the coding camp this week that I am lamenting. Coding is an activity at which I excel."

My mother offered a nod of understanding. "Ah, that does sound disheartening, but the farm will undoubtedly offer you a different kind of experience."

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his fam house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.

Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.

I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.

I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, "I'm sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop."

As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.

I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

It was on September 5th, my birthday, that we left Cambridge and moved away. We went to the seaside,to our holiday house, which was now to be our permanent home.

I remember the day was cold and grey, in falling slowly but constantly. My father drove in silence. No one spoke and all we could hear was the sound of the tyres on the wet road When we got to the small house near the sea, my mother quietly started to unpack the few things we had brought with us. Carol, Julie and I went down to the beach. We said we were going to look for crabs in the rockpools but actually, we just wanted to get away from our father and his cold silence.

We climbed along the rocks by the side of the beach. Julie and Carol became interested in some shells they found in one of the pools. I wandered away, lost in my private thoughts. It was my birthday, but no one had said "Happy Birthday" to me. I had not received any cards or presents.

I walked down to the seashore, where the waves were breaking lazily against the muddy sand. Suddenly, I saw something green sticking out of the water. I looked at it more carefully. The green thing moved closer and closer to the shore, and when it was almost near enough for me to touch, I realized what it was.

It was a bottle. I went over and picked it up, all the time looking at it. It seemed old, and had no label on it. Then 1 realized there was something inside. Slowly, I pulled out the wet cork from the top of the bottle. Inside was a piece of paper. With great care, 1 took out the folded paper and opened it.

Written on it were these words:

"To whomsoever finds this bottle, I promise you a new friend."

It took place in a teacher's family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.

As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour's cat jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son's nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben's mother remained calm. She realised she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.

Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.

In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother's face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him one.

The mother said, "This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!"

Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy's bad attitude disappeared.
