The demographic landscape of the globe is witnessing a notable transformation characterized by an increase in the proportion of individuals who are in their senior years: it is anticipated that by the year 2025, individuals who have reached or surpassed the age of 60 will constitute a significant 20 percent of the total global populace. The advancements in socioeconomic progress have resulted in a scenario where a considerable number of individuals are attaining their later years in a state of better health, financial stability, and educational attainment compared to the generations that preceded them.

This burgeoning cohort of older individuals, endowed with considerable economic clout and unique requirements, is increasingly being recognized as the most rapidly expanding consumer segment across the globe. This presents lucrative opportunities for growth in numerous major industries. The market, which caters to the needs of individuals who are over the age of 50 and is colloquially referred to as the "silver economy," is currently valued at an impressive $15 trillion on a global scale. It is anticipated that this valuation will experience a dramatic surge as the demographic of older individuals continues to expand.

Crucially, the "silver economy" holds the potential to contribute not only to the economic prosperity of a nation but also to its social advancement. This is because when enterprises endeavor to augment their financial gains by devising solutions that address the challenges encountered by the elderly, they can concurrently generate social value by enhancing the living standards of individuals as they progress through their later years.

In the context of China, which boasts the largest elderly population globally with 216.8 million individuals who are 65 years or older, the number is projected to soar to 400 million by the year 2050. Consequently, the "silver economy" in China is expected to experience a threefold increase in value, escalating from $750 billion in 2020 to a staggering $2.1 trillion by the year 2030. It is further projected that this figure could soar to $4.2 trillion, representing a significant 10 percent of China's Gross Domestic Product by 2035.

The recently disseminated document titled "Opinions on Developing the Silver Economy and Improving the Well-being of Older Persons" marks the first instance of a specific policy guideline in China that is dedicated to the advancement of the "silver economy." The trajectory of China's progress over the forthcoming decade is poised to provide invaluable insights for emerging economies, shedding light on the optimal strategies for catering to the needs of an aging demographic while simultaneously capitalizing on the economic development opportunities presented by such a significant demographic shift.

(1)、What does "silver economy" mean?
A、The economy related to silver mine industry. B、The economy concerning aging population. C、The economy dealing with social development. D、The economy connected with next generation.
(2)、What is the future of "silver economy" according the article?
A、Uncertain. B、Pessimistic. C、Negative. D、Promising.
(3)、What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A、China is not worried about its aging population. B、China will not experience aging population problem. C、China's silver economy will boom in the near future. D、The aging population doesn't make sense in China.
(4)、How did China tackle with the aging population?
A、China published its first specific policy guideline. B、China offered precious experience for other countries. C、China made a dramatic shift in economy development. D、China maximized its silver economy development.

A new study suggests that washing dishes by hand is healthier than using a dishwasher.

Nobody likes doing the dishes, but it turns out that doing this task might pay off in an unexpected way. According to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher might prevent the development of allergies (过敏).

Researchers in Sweden surveyed the parents of 1,029 children aged 7 and 8. They discovered that children whose families hand-washed the dishes instead of using a machine were less likely to have allergies.

Earlier research has shown that dishes washed by machine are cleaner than those washed by hand. So why would kids who eat with slightly dirtier plates be better when it comes to preventing allergies? One explanation is based on a theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis,” which says the reason why kids develop allergies is that their environment is actually too clean. Your immune system keeps you healthy by fighting germs like viruses and bacteria. But when you have allergies, it overreacts and tries to fight ordinary things like pollen(花粉) or certain foods.

Being exposed to germs, especially early in life is good training for the immune system, says the lead author of the study, Dr. Bill Hesselmar of Queen Silvia Hospital in Sweden. “You stimulate the immune system in various ways and it becomes tolerant.”

This study shows that while using the dishwasher might be easier, the old-fashioned method of cleaning up could be better for your health.

Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made you feel very uncomfortable over time? When you select your career, there's whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job's pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas:

1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people?

There are isolating(使孤立) jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.

2) How do you handle change?

Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don't happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.

3) Do you enjoy working with computers?

I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you'll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.

4) What type of work environment do you enjoy?

This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won't know immediately to a smaller setting where you'll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.

5) How do you like to get paid?

Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.

Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I've seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.

Do you like air travel with a service dog? Air travel makes some people very nervous. The crowds, the noise and flying itself can cause unease. But there are classes people can take to help them defeat their fear of flying. And, let me introduce similar training for service dogs that suffer the same problem

Service dogs almost never leave the side of the people they care for. You will see them working on buses, trains and other public transport systems. But the busy environment found at an airport can trouble even the best trained working dog.

People with disabilities depend on their dogs. They want the animals to safely guide them through security areas. They also need the dogs to remain calm on duty on the plane, even when the flying is not smooth. This takes special training. The Air Hollywood K9 Flight School is one place where such help can be found.

The school has a piece of equipment that provides the sights, sounds and even the feel of an airplane in flight. It is called a flight simulator, which was built for filming airplane scenes in movies.

Sandy Alexander has a disability that requires his two-year-old dog, Doc, to be always at his side. Mr. Alexander took the dog to the flight school to get him ready for plane trips. He says Doc did not like the bumpy part of the flight simulation( 模拟).

Dog trainer Mary Segall is with Canine Companions for Independence. It provides dogs for people with disabilities. Ms Segall says successful training is based on a simple rule: preparation.

"Dogs need to be exposed gradually and repetitively to stimulation, to the environment, to loud noises, to sounds and to other dogs so that when this experience happens to them on a daily basis, they are able to act in a way that they're used to acting and that they don't get excitable."

Dog owners who attended the training at Air Hollywood K9 Flight School say they now feel much more at ease about future flight. Their dogs also seem ready for take-off.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格) of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑) in Japan because most streets there don't have names; In Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it's about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don't know.

It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don't know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

One of the biggest social issues in Japan is the increasingly low marriage rate among young people and the small birth rate, which led to an aging and eventually shrinking(萎缩) population. Most young Japanese women simply don't seem interested in having many children.

Now what began in Japan is happening globally. As David Brooks wrote, birth rate is becoming smaller in much of the world, from Iran — 1.7 births rate per woman — to Russian, where low birth rates connected with high death rates mean the population is already shrinking. And this includes US, which has long had higher birth rates than most developed nations. Aging countries will face the burden of caring for large elderly populations without a larger resource of young workers.

It's true that global aging is going to present some major challenges. Who will take care of the elderly? Will an older world be less active and slower to change and adapt? It's all true. Sometimes I worry about a coming generational war over resources, just as I worry about how I will take care of my own parents in their old age, just as I worry about who might take care of me.

But here's the thing: an older world may have less pressure on the environment. As we all know, the environment is the real victim of overpopulation.

So maybe a world that grows slower and grows older will put less pressure on the environment, and buy us a few more years to ensure our energy use, along with our birthrates, reaches a sustainable(可持续的)level. After all, we're supposed to get smarter as we got older. Hopefully that holds true for the planet as well.
