Geoffrey Hampden has a large circle of friends and is very popular at parties. Everybody admires him for his fine sense of humour-everybody, that is, except his six-year-old daughter, Jenny.

    Recently, one of Geoffrey's closest friends asked him to make a speech at a wedding reception. This is the sort of thing that Geoffrey loves. He prepared the speech carefully and went to the party with Jenny. He had included a large number of funny stories in the speech and, of course, it was a great success. As soon as he had finished, Jenny told him she wanted to go home. Geoffrey was a little disappointed by this but he did as his daughter asked.

    On the way home, Geoffrey wondered what Jenny thought of his speech.

    On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

    Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

    New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become "Neighborhood Angels (天使)".

    Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.", she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.

    I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real "Neighborhood Angel".

The day of my big solo (独唱) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and my little brother. Uncle Scott and Auntie Tammy had even picked up my grandma from the nursing home so she wouldn't miss the big event.

Softball? She played first base while I watched her from my position in the outfield.

The day of the choir concert tryouts (选拔) was nerve wracking. We waited in the library while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins called my name, my whole body was shaking.

When I came back to the library, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and she calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.

Ms. Jenkins made the announcement at the end of the week of who had made the special choral group. I wasn't surprised when Renee's name was on her list and mine wasn't. "So," I said under my breath, "what else is new?"

Sudden clapping brought me out of my sulking (郁闷). Everyone was looking at me.

Ms. Jenkins looked at me and said, "Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me during your study halls since the solos take extra preparation."

Solo? I got the solo? I glanced over at Renee. She grinned (露齿而笑) and gave me the thumbs-up sign.

When the day came, we filed onto the stage and took our places.

When we filed off the stage, my family met me with praise and hugs and Renee was next to hug me.

Everybody has a surprise event in their life. This even can be positive or negative depending on who gave you a surprise or how you took it. Also, there are many ways in which you think that the surprise could have been better. One of the biggest surprises that I ever got was the one on my birthday.

Just few days before my birthday I realized that none of my friends was going to be around. This was because my birthday is during the holidays. Usually my friends make it a point that they are around during my birthday but this does not always happen. Most of the time, few of my friends are there, but this time none of my friends were around. I even called my cousins but even they had plans. I was disappointed and unhappy. I even told my parents that I did not want to celebrate my birthday this year.

My parents told me that I could go to my grandparent's place and celebrate my birthday.However, even that was not possible, as my grandparents had already planned to go to my uncle's place. I was extremely sad and unhappy that I would be all alone on my birthday.

Deep down, I knew my parents were trying their best to make me feel better, but it was hard to shake off the sadness. I couldn't help but wonder why this surprise event had turned out this way. In my mind, I imagined countless ways in which the surprise could have been better, such as having my closest friends show up unexpectedly or receiving a thoughtful surprise gift.

The day of my birthday arrived. I got up in the morning. Despite the initial disappointment, Itried my best to keep an open mind and make the most of my special day, even if it meant celebrating alone. I reminded myself that surprises aren't always perfect, and that sometimes life throws unexpected challenges on our way. I went down to have my breakfast after a long time and as I went down the stairs, I saw all my friends, cousins and my grandparents there.
