    Last weekend, I went to Mark's new house nearby a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket（桶）.

    We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.

    “Hey! What are you guys doing?” Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody's eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”

    Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. If he caught up with us, there's no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

    Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).

    One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

    Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

    The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided（碰撞）with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Dad's Outer-Space Sweater

Grandma knitted Dad a sweater for his birthday. It was PURPLE, the glow-in-the-dark purple! Even crayon purple couldn't compete. Dad loved it, claiming it was his favorite sweater. But I found it embarrassing as he wore it all the time: walking the dog; shopping for groceries and-worst of all-coming to my school events.

During a visit to our local farm, Dad tore his sleeve on a fence. When l pointed out that it was ripped, he said he would just wear it around the house. The hole got bigger and one night, at dinner, the thread became a table guest, Dad forked it up with spaghetti (通心粉)and lifted it to his. mouth.

"Look out, Dad!" I shouted, "You're about to take a bite of your sweater."

Dad laughed, put his fork down and sighed, "The sweater might be beyond saving now." The next day, Mom and I repurposed the sweater on a Halloween scarecrow and put it in our front yard. When our neighbor dropped by to give us some used tennis balls "for our cat, she gave her thumbs-up at our idea. But the sweater got rained on, and leaves stuck to it. Birds pulled the yarn ( 毛线) . Dad finally removed it and was about to throw it away. He stood there long, looking sad. It made me sad too. I thought about the day he got it, the day he tore it, and all those days he wore it, Then I thought of the day he almost ate it.

Hannah and I have been best friends since primary school and we spend almost every day with each other, sharing everything happening in our daily life and discussing problems in our school work. Sometimes, other children say we are no fun because we are both very academic and like to study, but we like it that way. We are both very hard-working and always get good grades at school.

Last Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. Thinking it was quite easy, I was not worried about the results at all. I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. Unexpectedly, the next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! My heart sank and a great sense of shame washed over me; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz!

Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful, as if nothing had happened, but Hannah sensed something was wrong. When we went to wash our hands in the girls' washroom before lunch, Hannah tried to figure out what was the matter. Struggling to hold back my tears, I admitted I had failed the math quiz. "But you are a born math genius and you have put all your efforts in it. There must be some mistakes!" Hannah couldn't believe her ears. "I shouldn't have been so confident. Would you please keep it a secret for me?" I begged. Hannah nodded, promising not to tell anyone else about the secret.

However, that afternoon I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class and, when I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, "Stupid Sarah got a D!" I was so upset that I felt like crying. I thought that Hannah must have told my classmates about my grade after promising not to. Everyone must have been laughing behind my back!
