It's possible to get ill at any time of the year, however, it seems that more people get sick in winter. So why does this happen?
The biggest reason is that the cold weather brings us indoors. Spending more time indoors can make us get close with others but it will be easier for us to catch a cold or flu(流感). Moreover, according to scientists, the virus(病毒) is protected(保护) by its own fatty coating(脂质外层), but this coating changes into liquid(液体) at higher temperatures(温度). So the virus is less able to travel in summer. In colder weather, the coating keeps complete(完整). That's why the virus will get into our body easily.
What's more, the air is drier in winter both indoors and outside. The dry air is good for the travel of viruses. Therefore, viruses can travel farther and stay in the air for longer. Besides, in winter, we often close our windows and doors to keep warm. Less fresh air indoors helps viruses live longer in a room.
What about other reasons? Cold weather may be bad to our body and immune systems(免疫系统). A study found that to lower the temperature inside the nose by 5℃ kills nearly 50% of its virus-fighting cells(抗病毒细胞).
In order to stop illnesses, here are some tips for you. We should do more outdoor exercise to keep our body strong. It's a good way to take a walk with your close friends and enjoy the fresher air in the park on weekends. Besides, washing our hands can often lower the travel of viruses.
Dear Dr. Know, There are too many rules! At 6:00 a. m. , my mom says, "Get up now and make your bed! "After breakfast, my mom always says, "Don't leave the dirty dishes in the kitchen! "After that, I run to catch the school bus. At school, we have more rules—don't be noisy, don't eat in class, … My dad says I can't play basketball after school because I must do my homework. I can play only on weekends. After dinner, I can't relax either. I must read a book before I can watch TV. But I have to go to bed before 10:00. Rules, rules, rules! It's terrible! What can I do, Dr. Know? Molly Brown |
Dear Molly, I know how you feel. People always tell us, "Don't do this! "or"You can't do that! "But think about it, Molly. There are a lot of things you can do. You can play basketball on weekends. You can watch TV after you read a book. Parents and schools are sometimes strict, but remember, they make rules to help us. We have to follow them. Good luck! Dr. Know |
