Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶) . The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹) . F{#blank#}1{#/blank#}sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out e{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't struggle (挣扎；奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly！The struggle develops the e{#blank#}3{#/blank#} in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make the fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them s{#blank#}4{#/blank#} and ready to face life.

When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle.

One famous businessman, who now o{#blank#}5{#/blank#}many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. He had to b{#blank#}6{#/blank#}up a big family. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading s{#blank#}7{#/blank#} lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So, some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some a{#blank#}8{#/blank#}for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock—climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of t{#blank#}9{#/blank#}. For countries to continue to become successful, it is i{#blank#}10{#/blank#}that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

I was living in a house with a long history in Halifax, Nova Scotia five years ago. One day, one of my friends from the West Coast came to visit me. He was 1 for three weeks so he brought a lot of bags and suitcases, and other things like a 2  . I told him that he could sleep on the bed in the front living room.

One morning after a late night of drinking, my friend ran into my room, shouting, "FIRE! FIRE!"Without 3  , I jumped out of bed. The floor was 4  against my feet as I ran out into the hallway, right behind my friend. I couldn't see the fire anywhere, 5  as we ran towards the front door, I could hear the 6  making a loud noise all around me. It was inside the 7  . We ran out into the front yard and 8  at the house, seeing black smoke coming out of the 9  house.

We were standing there watching the house when I looked down and 10  all of my friend's bags and suitcases 11  lined up on the front grassland, including his basketball. When he noticed the house was on fire, he took 12  out to the grassland first. And then he came back to 13  me about it. That fire had started in the basement(地下室), and it spread up into the walls and was burning the 14  we were standing on. The floor and much of the house fell down not long after we came out. The firemen said we were very 15  .

Of course, we are not friends any more.

①Tom lived with his grandfather, who is regarded as the wisest man in the village. Many people went to grandfather for advice or help. 

②One day, Tom saw three men walking together. They found a single-log（独木）bridge halfway, below which there was a deep river. 

③The first man didn't hesitate（犹豫）to step on the bridge and he made it to the other side of the river. The second man came close to the bridge. When seeing the deep river, he was so afraid that he made no move. Encouraged by the first man, he put his feet on the bridge. Although his right foot was hurt in the middle of the bridge, he got there safely. But the third man was the least brave to cross the river. It was getting dark. Behind him were some hungry wolves, he felt hopeless. But he had to be brave to cross the river. Only after a few steps, he fell into the river. 

④Seeing the puzzled look on Tom's face, grandfather said sincerely（由衷地，语重心长地）, "When in difficulties, the more time it takes to hesitate, the higher price you'll have to pay."

It's Sue's first day of school. The girl meets many kids in the beautiful school, but she isn't1 . She has to leave her best 2 , a lovely cat, at home. Dad says it can't 3 her. 

Now Sue is having her last 4 today. But she just wants to go home 5 to play with her cat. So she begins to put her school things into the schoolbag. 

Mr Green, the maths teacher, 6 this And he asks, "What is two and two, Sue?"

Sue 7 , but she doesn't say a word. 

"If your mother gives you two pencils. " Mr Green then says, "and I give you two, how many 8 are there in your pencil case?"

"Five, Mr Green!"

The teacher feels surprised(惊奇的) and says with a 9 , "You should have four, Sue!"

"I don't think so!" Sue answers. "I already(已经) have 10 in my pencil case!"

①Colours are everywhere in our life. They have different meanings in different countries. Red is very important in China. Chinese people think it is a colour of good luck and happiness. So in China, you can see many red things here and there. 

②In the New Year, Chinese parents always put some money in a red envelope named hongbao. They give it to their children because they hope they can be healthy. People also write some good words on the red paper called chunlian as good wishes for the New Year. 

③On birthdays, some Chinese people like wearing red clothes and eating red eggs. They hope they can be healthy and have a long life. 

④For Chinese people, red is not just the name of the colour. In fact, it's the colour of the Chinese spirit(精神).
