Because earthquakes happen without warning, it's important to take steps now to prepare. Because you don't know where you will be when an earthquake happens, prepare some supplies for your home, workplace, and car.
1. Water.
    A person needs at least 1/2 gallon of water daily just for drinking. Store at least 1 gallon of water per person per day and be prepared for a 72-hour period. It is suggested that you buy bottled water. Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open it until you need to use it. Also, do check the “use by” date.
2. Food.
    It's always a practical idea to keep a supply of non-perishable(不易腐烂的) food on hand. Have an enough supply of canned food, powdered milk, dried fruits, non-salted nuts and canned juices for at least 72 hours.
3. Flashlights(手电筒) and spare batteries.
    Keep a flashlight beside your bed, at your place of work, and in your car. Do not use matches or candles after an earthquake until you are sure that no gas leaks.
    Prepare a battery-powered radio and spare batteries. Most telephones will be out of order, so radios will be your best source of information.
4. Clothes.
    If you live in a cold place, you must think about warmth. You might not have heat after an earthquake. Think about your clothing and bedding supplies.

      The Milu deer is a kind of animal with large horns(角). They were very common in China long ago. They lived together and ate grass and the soft parts of trees. In the past, people did not protect the Milu deer and killed them for food or sport, so they disappeared(消失) from China .

      Luckily before all of them disappeared, the Duke of Bedford(贝德福特公爵) took some to Britain. The Milu deer like the cool, wet weather in England and their numbers increased(增长) year by year. As a result, when in1985, the government of China wanted to bring back the Milu deer, the Duck of Bedford was able to help. The first deer came back to China to the Nanhaizi Milu park near Beijing and to Dafeng, Jiangsu Province.

      Since they returned to China, their number has grown quickly .There are now so many of them that a new park has been opened for them in Hubei Province. Now the Milu deer live in the wildlife parks and have good protection. We hope that one day they can live in the wild again.

    Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so many plants growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on at all?

    To grow, plants need some things. One is warmth. In very cold places, almost nothing grows, Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth, only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why dry deserts(沙漠）almost don't have trees or grass.

    Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots（根）and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is on hard land. The plants here can only grow in the soil（土壤）between the cracks of the stones.

    Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

    What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy（有沙的）beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won't. Even if（即使）the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

Waste sorting is a wonderful way to make good use of energy and protect the environment. But do you know how to sort the waste?

    Usually, people should sort their waste into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Different kinds of waste should go into different bins. Wet waste means the things you don't want but pigs can eat, mostly coming from your kitchen. Things that can be used again, such as paper, metal and glass, are recyclable waste. Harmful waste might be dangerous or cause serious pollution, like medicine and batteries(电池). And any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go into the dry waste bin.

    Different countries are trying different methods to sort the waste. A university in England has invented a smart bin. When people drop their waste into the bin. It can tell what kind of waste it it and sort it correctly. The bin can also compress the waste to make it smaller in size and take up less space. In South Korea, people have to separate their food waste from other kinds of waste and pay for it. The more food waste they throw away, the more they pay. Japan has the strictest rules for waste sorting in the world. For example, plastic bottles and their caps should go into different bins.

    Basketball, running and swimming are popular events (项目) at the Olympics. But there are also some events that are not as popular. Some are even very strange. Let's see if you have any knowledge about the following events.

	Tug-of-war     This event started in 1900 and left the Olympics in 1920. The team wins if they pull the rope past a certain point first. Interestingly, more than one team from a country can enter in this event. This makes it possible for one country to win several medals
	Rope climbing     It first appeared as an Olympic sport in 1896. The climber who spends the shortest time reaching the top is the winner. The rope used to be 15 meters long. Years later, it was shortened to 8 meters, for some reason. After 1932, there was no rope climbing in the Olympics.
	Race walking     In race walking, walkers have to win the race by walking. To make sure that they do not run, race walkers must have one foot on the ground at all times. Race walking has been an Olympic sport since 1904. Men enter in 20 kilometer and 50 kilometer races; women only race 20 kilometers.
