Seven years ago, Kevin Stephan, then aged 11, was playing baseball when a player accidentally hit him with a bat (球棒).

    Kevin fell down and his heart stopped. Penny Brown, the mother of another player, was watching the game. Penny usually worked in the evenings as a nurse, but luckily that evening she wasn't working. Penny ran to help Kevin and saved his life.

    Nearly seven years later, Kevin was washing up in the kitchen of the Hillview Restaurant in Buffalo, New York State. Normally, 18-year-old Kevin had classes in the afternoon, but that week there were exams and he didn't have any classes. At about 2 p. m. , Penny Brown was having lunch with her family in the restaurant. She was eating when some food got stuck in her throat. She was very frightened because she couldn't breathe.

    Kevin was a volunteer firefighter in his free time and he ran to help. A waitress tried to help her, but the food was still stuck in Penny's throat. Kevin pulled his hands quickly into her stomach and saved Penny's life. He didn't know it was Penny, but his mother, Lorraine Stephan, was also having lunch in the restaurant. She realized that Penny was the woman who saved Kevin's life, seven years ago, at the baseball game. Both Penny and Kevin were completely amazed by the coincidence (巧合)!

    It's the day before school starts. Mum takes her three little boys, Jim, Bob and Tom, shopping for clothes and school things. There are so many people in the shopping center. "Stay with me, "Mum says. But it doesn't take a long time for her kids to go here and there.

    While Jim is trying on a new shirt, Bob goes away. He is thirsty and runs to buy three bottles of cola. While Bob is looking for a pair of shoes, Mum can't find Tom. He sees his classmate Jack, so he goes to talk with him. While Tom is choosing a schoolbag. Jim and Bob are out of sight(在视野之外). They drink too much cola and go to the bathroom(厕所).

    It's seven when they get home. Mum is really tired. She gets a pen and writes one rule(规定)on the list of "Family Rules"一Shop with one boy each time.

At the age of 16, Einstein always played with a group of naughty kids. He was so busy playing, so he didn't study enough and failed his final exam.

One morning, when Einstein was holding a fishing rod and was about to go fishing with his friends, his father1 him and said calmly, "Einstein, you're so fond of playing all day that you failed your exam. I'm worried about your future."

"What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but they could 2 go fishing." "My boy, you can't think like that," his father said. "There is a story that people tell in our hometown. Listen to it now."

"There were two cats playing on a roof. But unluckily, one cat was careless and 3 the chimney while holding the other cat. When the two cats tried their best to climb out of the chimney, one cat had soot (烟灰) on the face, while the other cat's face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its face must be 4 , so it ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its face was also clean, so it just walked down the street as usual. People all laughed at this cat."

"Einstein, no one can be your '5 '. Don't blindly follow others. You have to think for yourself. If you take your cue from others (照别人的样子做), you will never learn."

Hearing this, Einstein thought for a while and then laid down his fishing rod and returned to his room. He decided to pay more attention to his6 and less attention to what his friends were doing. This allowed him to be successful.

Nina felt nervous this morning. She couldn't believe that she decided to tryout for a talent show. She loved to sing but she disliked singing in front of other people. 

Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door of the theater and went inside. 

The room was filled with laughing children. Nina saw Luz, James and others from her class. The bright, sunny room left her no place to hide. A few teachers sat on chairs. They waited for the children to become quiet. 

"Hi, Nina!" Luz called out. "I didn't think you would tryout. You are so timid(胆怯的) in front of people. "

"That's not true, " Nina said. "I'm not shy at all. "

"Yeah, right, " Luz chuckled(轻声地笑) and ran off to find a seat. 

One by one the students got up on the stage(舞台) and did their acts. 

"Nina Martinez!" a voice called out. It was Mrs. Brent, the music teacher. Nina rose from her chair. She felt small as she walked to the huge, empty stage. Her face was hot and her shaking hands were as cold as ice. 

"I-I-" Nina began, and then stopped. "I can't, " she said softly. 

"Close your eyes, " said Mrs. Brent gently. "Forget about everyone else. Just sing. "

Nina felt silly, but she gave it a try. She closed her eyes and raised her voice and sang out. Her hands stopped shaking. 

The song was so nice that everybody enjoyed it. 

Nina heard Mrs. Brent clap (鼓掌) loudly at the end of her song. "That's the first time I have really heard your voice, " she said. "You are in the show!"

Nina let out a big sigh(叹息) and smiled happily.
