Bob is eleven years old. One day, his friend Jenny said to him, “I'm going to have a birthday party on Saturday. Bob, can you come?”

      Bob asked his mother, and his mother said, “Yes, you can go.” On Saturday afternoon, his mother said to him again, “Now, Bob, when you go to the party, you must be polite(礼貌的), and don't ask for food until someone gives it to you. ”

     “All right, Mom.” Bob said, and he went to Jenny's house by bike.

      There were many children at the party. They played games for about an hour, and then Jenny's mother gave them some food, but she forgot Bob and didn't give him any. After a long time, he took up his plate（盘子）and said loudly, “Does anyone want a nice clean plate?”

    An Englishman was showing a foreign visitor around London" What's that strange building?" asked the visitor. " That's the Tower(塔)of London" " I see. How long did it take to build it?" "About 500 years." "In my country we can build it in five months. "said the visitor. A short time after that they came to St. Paul's Cathedral (大教堂). "Very interesting!" said the visitor. "How long did it take to build it?" "Nearly forty years, "said the Englishman. "In my country we can finish it in forty days." said the visitor. This went on all day. They visited most of the best known buildings in the city. Every time they saw a new one, the visitor asked what it was and how long it took to build it. Then he said that they could do the same thing much faster in his country. At last the Englishman got angry with the visitor though he tried not to show it. A few days later they came to the House of Parliament(议会大厦)and the visitor asked his usual question. "What's that?" The Englishman answered, "I've no idea. It wasn't there last night. "

The Basket

    Two things changed my life; my mother and a white, pretty bike basket. My mother is a strict parent and I had to earn my pocket money by doing housework around the house.

    One day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed, and there it was in the window; white, shiny, and decorated with beautiful flowers. It was so special and I knew I had to have the basket. "It's beautiful," my mother said when I pointed it out to her.

    "Mom, please, can I get it? I'll do more housework for as long as you say, but I need that basket. I really love it……"

    "You know," she said gently, "If you save up, you could buy this yourself." "By the time I make enough, it'll be gone!"

    "I'll buy the basket for you, but you have to work for it," she said.

    My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some secret place I couldn't find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing income. And then, weeks later, I jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amount we'd agreed upon.

    Days later, the unthinkable thing happened. A neighbor girl appeared with the exact same basket on her shiny, new bike. The eight-year-old me cried and ran fast back home to tell my mother about this terrible news.

    And then came the lesson I've taken with me through my life; "Honey, it doesn't matter that the baskets look the same. Your basket is extra-special," Mom said, gently drying my hot tears. "Your basket is special because you got the basket through your hard work."

Max and Holly sat beside each other in a classroom. Their teacher Miss Carr stood at the front of the classroom and looked at them with a strange stare. "Silence!" Miss Carr shouted. "You're only allowed to speak if you want to say "I'd like to do extra hard MATH", understand? "

Then the bell rang for lunchtime and everyone jumped to their feet. "Sit down!" shouted Miss Carr. Everyone did as they were told. Miss Carr held up some sheets of paper. "These are new school rules, written by our wonderful new headteacher, Mr. Roberts, " she said. "You must do exactly as they say from this moment on. I want everyone to take a copy for your parents."

"Look at this!" Max said, reading the first line. "Rule one: No pupil will be allowed to go out at playtime unless they have passed a daily spelling test." Max and Holly then continued to look at the other new school rules. 

"Rule two: We're not supposed to be in here at lunchtime."

"Rule three: Pupils must eat cabbage stew or sprout surprise for lunch."

"Rule four: All P. E. will now take place outdoors—no matter what the weather is."

…

"Something's wrong." said Holly, "Things have been strange ever since Mr. Roberts took over as our head teacher last week. We need to find out what's going on."

Then Max and Holly walked to the teachers' office and stepped inside, surprised to find that many teachers have been tied up in the room! From their words, Max and Holly knew that the teacher in the classroom just now was just a robot clone (克隆) and she was not real Miss Carr, even the new headmaster! Max and Holly then succeeded in freeing all the teachers trapped. 

"We'll deal with those rotten robots!" said one of the teachers, as they ran out of the room. 

"How can I ever thank you, Max?" asked the real Miss Carr. 

"How about no homework for the rest of the school year."

Finally, Max and Holly realized that the school rules made by their real headmaster were so nice.
