One morning the Smiths all wanted to eat something, but there was only one piece of cake. Everyone thought (认为), "____".

Dad said Grandpa should (应该) eat it. He was old. He took the plate (盘子) to Grandpa.

Mum said Grandma should eat it. She did housework every day. She got the plate from Dad. Mia got the plate from Mum. She said that grandparents and parents should eat it. Her mother was very surprised (吃惊的), but then she was very happy.

Grandpa said Mia should eat it. He said she was very cute in the family. He took the plate to Mia.

Hearing what Grandpa said, they all thought Mia should eat it. But Mia couldn't eat it. She didn't want to take the plate.

Then the cake dropped (掉) on the floor. Bruno, a dog caught it in his mouth (嘴). He liked it a lot.

Then, Mia had an idea. The family went out, for ice cream, but they didn't take Bruno.

I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.

"Master! Master!" he cried, "There's a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the shore in a boat!"

I jumped up and ran with him down to the shore. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates(海盗)!"Don't let them see you, Friday!" I called, "We'll hide in the trees and watch. "

There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners(囚犯). Their arms were tied with rope, but their legs were free and they could walk. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.

Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.

"Don't be afraid, "I said. "I'm an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you. "

The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.

Perhaps they thought I was a wild man myself, in my strange clothes made of animals' skins, and with my long hair and beard.

Then the oldest man spoke, "I am the captain of that ship, "he said, "and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me.

Now they're going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island. "

"Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?"

"Only two, "he answered, "and they've left those on the boat. "

"All right, "I said. "We'll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England. "

Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

People are always trying to live a healthy life. You might have read so much on this topic. The following ideas may sound strange but they can really help you. 

Exercise when you are tired. After a long and tiring day of study, exercising might not sound like a good idea, but it should. In fact, physical activities can provide you with the missing energy. Research shows that exercising for just 30 minutes can make you feel good! 

Write by hand to help the brain be active. Although writing something using a computer is faster, it is much better to remember the whole thing by writing it down by hand. When you read a handwritten text naturally, it's easier for your brains to remember the information. 

Spare more time for yourself. By sparing the time for yourself and just being alone for a while, you can have a chance to think and get to know yourself better. And you won't behave impulsively (冲动地) . 

Drink hot drinks on a hot day. What cools more on a hot summer morning, cold water or hot water? The study shows that the hot water does make people feel cooler. When you are drinking something hot, the body will feel the change in temperature and increase the perspiration (流汗) , which helps you cooldown! 

A Fun Plant Experiment to Try at Home

Without water, plants would die. How does water get from roots of a plant to the other parts of the plant? The water travels through" small pipes" to all parts of the plant. And here is a scientific experiment to show it. 

What we need:

* a celery stalk(芹菜茎) with leaves

* a knife

* some red food colour from tomatoes

* a glass of water

How we do it:

1. Put a few drops of the red food colour in the glass of water. 

2. Cut the bottom(底部) of the celery stalk and place the celery in the water. 

3. Leave the celery stalk in the glass of water for a few hours. 

4. Take the celery stalk out of the water and cut it into pieces across the stem. 

What happens:

You can see red food colour in all cross parts from the bottom of the celery stalk right up to the leaves. 

Why it happens:

The water, with the red food colour, has run in the celery stalk through the small pipes in it. The experiment, therefore, shows that the small pipes in the plant allow water to reach all parts of it. The red food colour shows where the water has travelled in the celery stalk. 

 This morning was not going well. Aftertwo hours' hard work, I was already falling behind. Sitting on the examination table was my next 1 , a girl of five-year-old in a pretty pink dress. Her right hand was in a bowl of cleansing water with medicine,2 her large brown eyes had tears in them.

 Standing beside her was a tall man. He turned to his daughter andbegan moving 3 hands, seeming to communicate the words that he was whispering(低语) softly. "It' s all right. The doctor is here." I realised that he was communicating through4 .

"My daughter Sara is deaf," the father told me. The child had lost her hearing when she was six months old. I felt sadness. On the outside, Sara5 any other little girl. Yet, her world was now 6 .

"We were on the way to Sara' s dance class when she fell."

"Dance class?" I asked,7 .

"Oh, yes!" the father laughed. "Sara dances to the music. She can8 the music because music has vibrations(振动). You can feel them 9 you sit on a wooden floor listening to loud music."

I pointed to Sara' s hand. She held out her injured hand for me. There were some cuts, but10 serious.

"It's okay," I said. I told her carefully and slowly that I would clean and cover the cuts. Sara11 her head. She understood.

 As I gently cleaned her hand, I listened to the sounds 12 me. These were sounds that I had heard a thousand times but had 13 taken for granted(认为理所当然的). A door suddenly closed with a loud noise in the next room. It gave me a fright, but Sara continued to look 14 at her hand and at me.

A tornado (龙卷风) is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly.  They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage.  As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far.  It is important to find a safe place if a tornado gets close.  

A safe place could be a basement or the lowest floor.  If you are in a home without a basement, try to find a first-floor bathroom or a small room without windows in the middle of your house.  You should curl up (蜷缩) into a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands.  

But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes.  They are scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes.  One of the best ways to do this is to get as close as possible to the tornado.  They use special tools to measure (测量) what is happening in and around a tornado.  

One special tool is called a tornado probe (探测仪).  Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors (传感器) to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction.  Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it's like to be in a tornado.  

To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or into a tornado.  Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next.  Then they drive to that location and put down the probe.  If they do not guess correctly, they pick up their probe and try another place.  If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe.  Then they take all of the measurements from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form and travel.  And they can give people some warning to keep away from a dangerous tornado.
