All of us can give others a hand as long as we are willing to do so. Actually, there are some people doing kind things all the time. Spreading kindness, one good deed at a time, is Karla Gibson's mission. "I wish everyone could join me. There are so many 1 things going on in the world; I mean every day," said Karla.

Karla had the 2 and sense of duty in December of 2013. The single mother of three said she tended to feel depressed around the holidays, so she 3 to do something to cheer others up. She started a Facebook page and 4 her good deeds each day, from feeding the homeless to giving Easter gifts to the incarcerated (囚犯). She hoped to 5 others.

"We have to do something. Our 6 can make a difference in someone's day. You 7 know when someone might be having their worst day, and then something like buying them a coffee can change their whole attitude," Karla 8.

Karla's greatest 9 so far had to do with coffee. On September 27th, Karla's birthday, she went to her local Starbucks and gave the 10 $127 to pay for other people's drinks. She sat at the end of the drive-through holding a 11 that read, "Have a great day." She ended up 12 about 23 customers. "It was really fun. It was 13 one of the best birthdays ever." she said. Her kindness that day didn't go 14. One couple was so grateful that they surprised her with flowers and balloons to show their 15.

Karla's acts of kindness have become a 16 affair. Her two sons are always 17 others. "Sometimes I'll ask Kyle, 'So, did you do anything extra nice today?' and his answers are like 'Somebody 18 something in the hallway and I picked it up' or 'I held the door for someone', that kind of thing," said Karla.

It's because of Mom that the boys think it's 19 to give a hand to others. "I think it's a great idea of hers. It's always nice to help someone out 20 they really need it," said Karla's 15-year-old son Chad.

One day, when I was a teenager, I was home along doing two of my favourite things: I was eating a huge plate of spaghetti and mealbails and I was 1.

At the time, my family pet bird - a big white cockatoo named Luke was free from his 2 and flying around inside the house. Luke, which wasn't3 to use real words, was chucking (咯咯地叫) away, 4 me, but I wasn't paying attention to him. I was 5 on reading my detective book. 6 Luke decided to get closer and before I 7 it, he'd landed right on top of my spaghetti and meatbails! I was so surprised - my mind went8. My reaction was the same as yours would be: I shooed (用"嘘"声吓唬)him off my food! This wouldn't have been so bad 9 one thing: Luke had 10 my spaghetti. So when he 11 again, the spaghetti still winded in his12 went flying everywhere. He landed on my shirt. He hit me in the 13. As I pulled noodles out of my hair, Luke 14 spaghetti sauce all the way. He wasn't15, except for his16the sauce in his beautiful white 17 turned him splotchy (油渍斑斑的)orange for several weeks.

See how funny spaghetti can be? And see how 18 reading can be? So go ahead and enjoy a good book. But if you like to read while you eat, you'd better keep an eye on your food. And if you find a19 novel at the 20 with red, splotchy (油渍斑斑的)spots on two pages near the middle, you'll know that I've read that book, too!

Since finishing my studies at Harvard and Oxford, I've watched one friend after another land high-ranking, high-paying Wall Street jobs. As executives (高级管理人员) with banks, consulting firms, established law firms, and major corporations, many are now 1 on their way to impressive careers. By society's 2, they seem to have it made.

On the surface, these people seem to be very lucky in life. As they left student life behind, many had a 3 drink at their cheap but friendly local bar, shook hands with longtime roommates, and 4 out of small apartments into high buildings. They made reservations at restaurants where the cost of a bottle of wine 5 a college year's monthly rent. They replaced their beloved old cars with expensive new sports cars.

The thing is, a number of them have 6 that despite their success, they aren't happy. Some 7 of unfriendly coworkers and feel sad for eight-hour workweeks devoted to tasks they 8. Some do not respect the companies they work for and talk of feeling tired and 9. However, instead of devoting themselves to their work, they find themselves working to support the 10 to which they have so quickly become 11.

People often speak of trying a more satisfying path, and 12 in the end the idea of leaving their jobs to work for something they 13 or finding a position that would give them more time with their families almost always leads them to the same conclusion: it's 14. They have loans, bills, a mortgage (抵押贷款) to 15, retirement to save for. They recognize there's something 16 in their lives, but it's 17 to step off the track.

In a society that tends to 18 everything in terms of dollars and cents, we learn from a young age to consider the costs of our 19 in financial terms. But what about the personal and social costs 20 in pursuing money over meaning? These are exactly the kinds of costs many of us tend to ignore — and the very ones we need to consider most.

I learned a valuable lesson from my 13-year-old son last week. We were hiking in the woods on our very hilly, rocky farm. He stopped near a cliff (悬崖) and started1some rather large stones towards the edge, seeing how2he could break them into pieces on a large rock lying at the3. I got tired of4him do this after about 20 minutes and suggest that we5on. He refused and kept on his constant picking,6and throwing stones.

Finally after some time I said, “Do you7that you have been-picking up stones for more than half an hour? This is just the8task as Dad asks you to do every weekend to help9the fields. But you always do it for no more than two minutes, and then find a( n)10to quit." His reply was, "But this is11!"

This hit me like a rock. How many tasks that we are tired of can be12something fun? I know this sounds like a13because sometimes things are just not fun at all.14, with some creative thinking, I bet there are15. For example, you can try turning on some pleasant music and then dancing16the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器), or you can write a secret message in the dust on your dresser and erase it when you clean it.

For17, organizing competitions for your employees can create some fun and increase18. If you19a business yourself, you can compete just with yourself. Simply set your goals and choose a(n)20for your completion. The idea is to make achieving goals fun. So, make your work fun and get it done.
