It takes time to practice critical（批判性） thinking, but it's never too late to start. The following steps will help people to become critical thinkers.

In a big country, a man was living along with his family. The man had a large amount of money. One day he took his son on a trip to the countryside. The dad's only 1 was to show his son how poor people live, so the son could 2 his good fortune（命运）.

During their journey, they reached a small village. There, they spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be 3 a very poor family.

On their 4 from their trip, Dad asked his son, "How was the trip, my son?"

The father got a bit confused（困惑） with his son's answers.

The son 9 , "We have a small piece of land to live on and they have field s which go 10 our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others." The wise son's learning did not end yet. The son went on 11 his trip experience, "We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have 12 around our house to protect us, but they have friends to protect them. We spend our free time with television s and mobiles, but they spend their free time with family and relatives."

The son summed up（总结） his experience on the trip to the village, "Thank Dad for showing me how 13 we are...!!"

Money can buy clothes, or cars, or big houses or many other things which make your life 15 . But there are a few things that money cannot buy. What makes your life rich is love, kindness, compassion, friendships...

The meaning of life is what we choose it to be. To Jiang Bing, a man from Weinan, Shaanxi Province, life just means living and helping others. Suffering (受苦) from ALS (渐冻症) for more than 30 years, Jiang has never lost his love for life. What's more, he has been teaching more than 200 children for free for over twenty years.

At the age of 16, Jiang Bing fell to the ground on the way to school and was unable to stand up again. One doctor told him that he had a disease that was hard to cure (治愈) and suggested giving up searching for treatment. Surprisingly, Jiang was really sad at first. Then he faced it positively instead of feeling fearful (害怕的) and hopeless. He kept studying every morning and valued every moment, spending one day like it was a month.

Though Jiang couldn't enter a university himself because of the disease, he succeeded in teaching his younger sister and helping her get into a university in 1994. Later, the people living in the community realized that the special man could teach their children. So they asked him for help. The next year, Jiang started helping children with their studies. He could also teach them art and clay sculpture (泥塑). He once taught 24 children in one single class, all for free.

Today many of the children that he taught have finished their university studies. Zhao Feiyu, a student who once received Jiang's help, runs an art training school now. "He taught us wisely and carefully, and took no money," he said. "He is my teacher and friend."

A Fun Plant Experiment to Try at Home

Without water, plants would die. How does water get from roots of a plant to the other parts of the plant? The water travels through" small pipes" to all parts of the plant. And here is a scientific experiment to show it. 

What we need:

* a celery stalk(芹菜茎) with leaves

* a knife

* some red food colour from tomatoes

* a glass of water

How we do it:

1. Put a few drops of the red food colour in the glass of water. 

2. Cut the bottom(底部) of the celery stalk and place the celery in the water. 

3. Leave the celery stalk in the glass of water for a few hours. 

4. Take the celery stalk out of the water and cut it into pieces across the stem. 

What happens:

You can see red food colour in all cross parts from the bottom of the celery stalk right up to the leaves. 

Why it happens:

The water, with the red food colour, has run in the celery stalk through the small pipes in it. The experiment, therefore, shows that the small pipes in the plant allow water to reach all parts of it. The red food colour shows where the water has travelled in the celery stalk.

 How are you? I'm in a new school this term. And I am writing to tell you some{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(信息) about my school. 

 My new school is big and nice. There are nine {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(年级), 1, 400 students and 140 teachers in our school. My math teacher is a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}('hænsəm/) man. He is very nice to us. My classmates are really friendly too. We play {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(/tə' geðə(r)/) every day. They teach me Chinese and I teach them English. 

 Look! This is our classroom. It's big and {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(/'taIdi/). You can see a map on the wall. You can also find something {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(其他的) in the classroom, such as the bookcase. Behind my school there is a small river, and we often do some {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(活动) by the river and have a great {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(乐趣).

 Elephants are very special animals. They are very smart and have different emotions(情感), such as happiness and sadness. They can even cry. Elephants can learn many things, and in some countries, people let them carry heavy things.

 There are two kinds of elephants: African and Asian elephants. African elephants are usually larger and they can be 7,000 kilos or more. All elephants like eating different kinds of plants, such as grass, leaves and vegetables. They eat a lot-up to(多达)300 kilos a day. They can live for about 60 years.

 Unluckily, the number of wild elephants is going down. Many people kill(杀死) them mainly for their tusks-the long pointed(尖的) teeth. Now more and more people try to protect them.
