When I was little，I was really little.But my dream was big.I dreamed of being a basketball player.I tried out for the teams at school，but I was never given a chance.

As I got older，I did grow a little bigger，but not a lot bigger.On my 12th birthday，I decided to try a new sport：running.I told Grandpa，"I'm going to be a sportsman.""

"Dave，"Grandpa began gently，"if you can't be big，you can do something big."

I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday.On my 13th birthday，I did it again，but I added an extra（额外的）mile.On my 14th birthday，I ran 14 miles.15 on my 15th，16 on my 16th，and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.All this running inspired（激发） another big dream.Someday，I'd run the Boston Marathon（马拉松赛）.I told Grandpa about my decision."But，Dave，you haven't trained for the marathon.Are you sure you're OK？"Grandpa asked.But he was still sure to walk over and cheer me on.I ran fast that day.But I fell at Mile 18 and the workers sent me to the hospital.Later that night，I called Grandpa and told him I failed."No，"he said calmly，"you didn't fail.You discovered something."I did？"I asked.

"Yes，you discovered that big dreams don't just come true.They take work.If you train and work hard，I am sure to wait for you next year and cheer you on."

I trained every day，running miles and miles.Sadly，just two months into my training，Grandpa died.He wouldn't be waiting for my second Boston Marathon.I decided I'd run for him.

That day，I ran fast，"Keep going!You can do it!"His words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step.As I crossed the finish line，I threw my arms in the air and cried， "Grandpa，I did it!"

Pickleball is rising in China

Pickleball, a relaxing sport that has been around since the 1960s, is becoming popular in China Young people are growing especially interested in the game.

The sport of pickleball was invented in the US, in which two or four players hit a wiffle hall over a net. It looks like tennis, but is played on a badminton court(羽毛球场) with a paddle(球拍).

It has many holes which are designed to stabilize(稳定) its flight as it travels from court to court. Balls come in different colors, including white, yellow and green, but must be a single color to meet the rules of the International Federation of Pickleball(国际匹克球联合会).

It's smaller than a tennis racquet(球拍) but larger than a ping-pong paddle. It is mainly made of light materials.

A piokleball court is the same size as a doubles(双打) badminton court. It's about6×13.5 meters.

In Northwest China's Gansu Province, there are camel traffic lights at Mingsha Mountain and Yueya Spring, a scenic spot (景点) surrounded by sand dunes (沙丘). A red camel shows "stop" and a green camel shows "go". The special traffic lights, first designed to reduce the traffic jam in the desert, got much media attention in 2023 and have become a popular tourist attraction. 

According to a report, more than 3. 7 million tourists visited the spot in 2023, with 42 percent choosing camel rides. 

The quick increase in tourists needs more local camel herders (牧民). Zhao, 42, is an experienced camel owner from the Yueya Spring Village, who owns 21 camels. The rapid development of tourism has brought hope for the villagers. And they began to do the camel walking business at the scenic spot. 

In the busy season in summer, the scenic area is home to about 2, 000 camels. Each camel undertakes three trips a day. 

"Our village used to be poor, but now we are rich because of the camel walking business. They are like family members to us. In summer, we give them nice food and help them cool down. We also take them to the vet for annual check-ups in winter. " Zhao said. 

Paul, Emma, Bill and Sarah are good friends. They have different (不同的) pets.

Paul's pet is yellow and white. How old is it? It's two. It likes swimming in summer(夏天). It's very cute and clever. Paul can ask his dog to sit down and stand up. It can also "shake hands(握手)"with Paul. Paul likes playing with it after school.

This is Emma's pet. It's a white rabbit. It's three. Emma likes taking the rabbit to the park on Saturdays and Sundays. It likes playing on the grass (草坪). Emma's friends like to play it.

That's Bill's pet. It's red, yellow, green and black. It's very nice. It can say "Hello!" "Good morning!" "Goodbye!" to him. It can also sing. When Bill is not happy, he listens to the bird sing.

Sarah's pet is an orange and white cat. It's one year old. It has two big eyes. It's very cute. It likes playing with ping-pong balls. When Sarah does her homework (家庭作业),it sleeps on the desk.

Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for a long time. 

But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it's not having money that brings happiness. Instead (相反地), it's giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a gift for a friend or a family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too. 

This idea of connecting (关联) your happiness to the happiness of others is called ‘ubuntu' in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa. He asked some children to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get sweets. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they did this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one. 

I like fishing with my parents at the weekend. But my friends always ask me, "How can you sit with   your parents for hours like that?"{#blank#}1{#/blank#} I just smile.

 Last Sunday, I went fishing with my parents by a river. They sat far away from me. I threw some bait(饵) into the river and sat down to watch my float(浮子). Suddenly, I saw it move. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} After an hour I still didn't catch a fish, so I went to see my mom and dad. I thought they might be luckier than me.
