Yuan Meng is a 6-year-old male giant panda born in France. He arrived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province on July 25, 2023. It was first trip to the motherland. China and France worked to make sure of the panda's safe journey.

Yuan Meng was born in France on August 4, 2017. He was the first giant panda to be born in Prance. His name, which "dreams come true", was chosen by China and France together. And his name shows the wishes for a friendship between the two nations.

His parents are Yuan Zai and Huan Huan. They were to the Beauval Zoo in France from China in 2012. Yuan Meng also has twin named Huan Lili and Yuan Dudu.

Giant pandas have got the love of of French people. After learning that Yuan Meng would leave France, many French people expressed hopes his stay would last longer. During the naming ceremony, the first lady of France, Brigitte Macron, expressed her for China's willingness to entrust(托种) the precious(珍贵的) animal to France. On May 17,2023, she visited the zoo to say goodbye to Yuan Meng took the chance to spread the importance of protecting endangered animals.

Have you ever heard of water bears? They have lived on the earth for more than 500 million years, long before dinosaurs. Though called "bears", they look completely different from bears! The largest ones are only about 1.4 mm long. Each of their eight legs ends with a claw (爪) . They also have sharp mouths.

Some of the places they live may surprise you! They live deep down in the ocean. It's too dark to see well, and the water from up above is very heavy. But tiny water bears can survive in such a difficult environment. In space, there is no air, water or food. But water bears can live there! Astronauts took some water bears outside the spaceship. Surprisingly, most of them lived. Some even laid eggs. The eggs even hatched into healthy babies!

There is no rain in dry valleys of Antarctica for about two million years. But water bears can survive in such a place! How? First, they curl into a ball. Then they do nothing. They can stay in this way for many years! When they get wet again, they uncurl and start to move around. Sometimes wind or water moves away when they curl up in a ball.

Besides the places mentioned above, water bears also live around us, but we need some effort to find them. If we are careful and lucky enough, maybe we can find one.

In Gansu province, three generations of workers have worked hard to stop desertification.

Babusha,a big sand dune(沙丘) at the edge(边缘) of the Tengger Desert, was a big cause of sandstorms in the 1980s. The desert destroyed farmland and villages in its south, and affected more than 30,000 people. However, with the effort of"the six old men"and their children and grandchildren, now,a green belt, which is 10 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide, has been built.

This project is time-consuning. Guo Chaoming and five other villagers first had the idea of renting 5,000 hectares (公顷) of sandy land to plant trees in 1981. Their original goal was to prevent sandstorms from destroying their crops. At the time, Guo, the oldest of the six, was already 61, while Zhang Runyuan, the youngest, was not yet 50.

At first, they planted 667 hectares of saplings (幼苗) . However, after the first sandstorm, no more than 30 percent survived. After countless failure, they successfully thought of the idea of burying wheat straw(埋麦秸) around trees to hold the sand.

Planting trees in desert is difficult, but taking care of them was even challenging. To protect the trees, they chose to live there for years, in a simple shelter they made from wooden poles and straw (木杆和稻草) . They used bricks(砖头) to support a cooking pot(灶台) , drank boiled water and ate steamed buns when hungry.

In the eyes of the six men, the Babusha forest farm became their most valuable possession. Even in the 1990s, when they were lack of money, they didn't cut down a single tree or grass to sell. Time passed by and four of the six passed away. But their children and grandchildren took up the torch and continued their work.

Now, the desert has changed into grassland and forest. The amount of plants has increased from less than 3% to more than 75%. In 2019, "the six old men"and their families were honored"Model of the Times"and"Most Beautiful Fighters" for their hard work.
