Helen is my grandmother. She is seventy- five {#blank#}1{#/blank#} old. She is very healthy. She {#blank#}2{#/blank#} good living habits. She can look after herself {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. For example, she cooks meals, washes clothes, does some cleaning and so on. She takes part in some activities for the old, too.

Every morning, my grandmother goes out with {#blank#}4{#/blank#} friends. They go to the park to sing  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} dance. In the park, they talk and laugh happily. After coming back from the park, she has a  {#blank#}6{#/blank#} breakfast and then she goes to the Home of Old People. She learns to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} photos there. In the afternoon, she plays the violin or draws {#blank#}8{#/blank#} at home. After supper, she watches TV and learns about the world. She goes to bed {#blank#}9{#/blank#} eight o' clock. She never stay s up. She likes to share her ways of keeping {#blank#}10{#/blank#} with others. She lives a healthy and happy life.

Last year, some groups of students in their community (社区) made a survey about "How do people spend their free time?" The following diagrams (图表) show some results of it:

Martin got an important lesson from his teacher Mr. Lee. He will never forget it. 

One day, Martin and Mr. Lee went out for a walk. They reached a farm where Martin saw a pair of old shoes. They seemed to belong to (属于) a poor farmer who would return after a whole day of hard work. Martin thought of an idea, "Why don't we hide these shoes and wait? It will be fun to watch his reaction (反应) when he can't find his shoes. " Mr. Lee thought about it for a while and asked Martin to put some coins in his shoes. 

The farmer finished his work. As he put his foot in the shoes, he felt something hard. He was amazed to find coins. He took them out and saw if (是否) someone was looking for them. He didn't see anyone, so he kept them in his pocket. He got moved and tears came out of his eyes. 

The farmer looked at the sky, "Many thanks to that unknown person. You help me at the time of need. 

Because of your kindness and help, now I can buy medicine (药) for my wife and bread for my hungry children. "

Martin's eyes were full of tears. Mr. Lee said, "Now tell me what makes you happier. "

 Martin said, "I understand the joy of giving is much more than taking. "

Today, roller-skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't 1  at all. Before 1760, no one had any ideas of roller-skating. That 2  because of a man named Joseph Merlin. He liked to make things and play the violin in his free time. Joseph Merlin was a man full of ideas and dreams. People called him a 3 . 

One day Joseph Merlin was invited to a 4 . He was very pleased and excited. As the day of the party came near, Joseph Merlin began to think 5  he could make an amazing entrance(登场) at the party. He had an idea. He thought everyone at the party would show much interest if he could 6  into the room. 

Joseph Merlin tried different ways to make 7  roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels 8  each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Joseph Merlin was 9  of his invention. And he dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the 10 . 

On the night of the party, Joseph Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin happily. Everyone was 11  to see him. But there was just one problem. Joseph Merlin couldn't 12  his roller skates. He rolled on and on. 13 , he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. The mirror fell down and broke into pieces. Joseph Merlin's idea was so good that 14  forgot his special entrance for a long time. But could he 15  the problem of stopping his roller skates?

He was an old man who fished alone in a boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.

It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry fishing tools.

The old man was thin with deep wrinkles（皱纹） in the back of his neck. His hands had the deep scars（伤疤） from dealing with heavy fish. But none of these scars were fresh.

Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and full of confidence.

"Santiago", the boy said to him as they climbed from the bank where the boat was pulled up. "I could go with you again. We've made some money."

"No," the old man said. "You' re with a lucky boat. Stay with them."

"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without a fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."

"I remember," the old man said. "I know you did not leave me willingly."

"It was papa who made me leave. I am a boy and I must do what he told me to."

"I know. I quite understand that."

"He hasn't much faith （信念）."

"No," the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?"

"Yes," the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the fishing tools home?"

"Why not?" the old man said. "Between fishermen."

They sat on the Terrace. Many fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Some other older fishermen looked at him and were sad. But they didn't show it and they spoke politely about the sea, the weather and of what they had seen.

Speak more

 On my way to work or in the supermarket,I try to describe my surroundings(环境) in my head or out loud to remind myself of vocabulary and useful phrases.

Join social groups

 Last term I joined a rock band and learned lots of new vocabulary about music. This term I will join a badminton club and a German conversation group to give myself more chances to practice speaking with people who have common interests.

Change the language settings(设置) on my mobile phone

 To encourage myself to think in German, I changed my mobile phone into German. Every time I send an e-mail, I discover new words.

Watch more films

 It's a good idea to watch familiar (熟悉的) films dubbed (配音) into German. All the voices are strange, but as I already know the story, I can follow what the characters are saying. I don't have to worry about missing anything.

Laugh at myself

I've learned from my first term that I'm very good at making mistakes. There was a time when I went shopping for a scarf and kept using the German word for"sheep". This term, instead of feeling stupid, I will laugh at my silly mistakes and try again.
