My parents hardly let me ask for help, so I trained myself to do things just by myself. I thought if I asked for help, I would be a problem to other people.

A few days ago, I was on a trip. To save money, I planned to stay in someone's house. When I arrived in the house owner's city, it was raining hard. My host was very friendly. She invited me to take a walk around her city. But I didn't have the right shoes for the bad weather. I wondered if she had any shoes for me, but finally, I said nothing.

It was really cold outside and the heavy rain made my shoes wet. When we got home three hours later, I had lost feeling in my feet. That was all because I wouldn't ask a simple thing like,"Could you find a pair of good shoes for me?"

From that day on, I tried hard to overcome(克服) the fear to ask. It took me a long time. I've found that people are always happy to offer help. What's more,asking isn't a sign of weakness. Asking gives you the chance to find the kindness of others.

Go to ask someone. The worst answer is just"no"while the best answer is an experience you'll never forget.

Confucianism (儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years. 

To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants (五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues (美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li. 

Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people. "What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others." It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule. "Treat others as you wish to be treated."

While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors. While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us. 

Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one's parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和谐的) society. Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Mr. Watson's store sold many different things. Every day, Jess came to the store and he loved to look at the pipes. One pipe especially caught his eye. He imagined that some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like his father that he didn't remember.

Jess reached out and touched the pipe. He kept thinking that when he was old enough, he would go to work and his mother could stay home. He would not have to wait three hours after school until she came.home from her job. Oh, why? He wondered, did it take so long to grow up and take his father's place.

He looked around the store and put the bowl of the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it- nothing more.

Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him. He turned around quickly. It was Mr. Watson, the friendly store owner.

"Hello, Jess," Mr. Watson smiled, and kept on walking. Jess struggled to answer but could not get his voice up. He swallowed and smiled back weakly.

The store seemed extremely warm. Jess watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store. Like sleepwalking, he moved towards the ground. He looked around and saw the empty swing. Sitting on the swing, a sharp pain caught him in the stomach. He knew it was the pipe he felt. He had walked out of the store with it!

The sun was slipping down through the trees and it was time to go home. His mother would look at him and she would know. She always knew. A bot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. He remembered the nice way she said, "You're a little man now, Jess." Her trust in him was all he could think about now. The pipe and its magic power meant nothing. His dream of growing up meant nothing.

Looking at the long shadows of the trees coming towards him, Jess now knew what he had to do. He jumped out of the swing and started running. His feet were quick, decisive, taking him straight back to the store like an arrow. Mr. Watson was just inside the door. Suddenly and blindly he held out the pipe. Mr. Watson gently took the pipe from the boy's hand and patted him on the

shoulder. Jess felt the warmth of Mr Watson's big hand, and felt his shoulders had become a little broader and stronger.

School Gardens Could Help Children

Try More Vegetables

①It's not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening programme in schools can help children eat more vegetables. 

②The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening programme for one school year. Every child in grades 3 — 5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the programme, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables. 

③The study found that vegetable intake increased greatly if the children grew their own produce across the year. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of some illnesses. What's more, increasing the kinds of vegetables children are exposed(接触) to may also make mealtimes much easier. "Children who are often exposed to different kinds of vegetables are more likely to try new foods, " explains Dr Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food. 

④Any chance to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. "If children are learning about vegetables at school, it's important for parents to encourage this interest at home, " says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful messages. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a delicious way. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from. 

⑤Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term. 

 Mr. and Mrs. George and Olivia Ransom bought an old house, and were spending time fixing it up. The walls needed painting and the wooden floorboards(地板) needed replacing.

 One day, they pulled (拉) up some old floorboards and were surprised to see a case under the floor. They pulled it out, dusted it off and opened it. It was full of old newspapers from the year1977. George and Olivia were interested to read the news stories at that time. But as they took the newspapers out, they noticed a black box at the bottom of the case. It was locked.

Then Olivia remembered that there were some old things in the kitchen. There was a cup with old keys in it. She ran to get the cup, took out the keys and tried them in the lock. One of them opened it!

 The box was full of jewellery (珠宝). There were necklaces and rings of silver and gold. Olivia and George were amazed. Who put the jewellery there, and why? Who did it belong to?

 George remembered a story in the old newspapers. He quickly found it again and they read it together.

"That name— Jensen, said George. "It's familiar to me— why?"

"It's the old lady who sold the house to us!" replied Olivia. "Her name was Mrs Jensen. She told us her husband died in 1978 and he was a jeweller."

"That's strange," said George. "I wonder, was there really a jewellery theft? Or did Stanley Jensen hide the jewellery under his own house? But why...?"
