AVOID PUBLIC WI-FI

DON'T OVERSHARE ONLINE

    Internet users can let their guard down when chatting with strangers on social media, letting slip their names, family details, workplace addresses and job titles to their new “friends”. Some parents even share photos of their children online, forgetting to hide details that can disclose their names, schools or where they live.

AVOID ONLINE SURVEYS

    Some questionnaires try to attract people with small rewards or a chance to take part in a “lucky draw”. But to qualify, people must fill in their names, phone numbers and home addresses. Check the website where the survey is being hosted and consider whether it's reliable.

KEEP ONLINE RESUMES BRIEF

    Internet users often do not hesitate to provide detailed personal information in their online resumes, thinking it can only help probable employers to contact them. Some job site operators even require applicants to list their family members' information. China's Ministry of Public Security says people should give only the information necessary.

TRACK COPIES OF YOUR ID CARD

    Banks, telecommunications operators and other service providers often require photocopies of your identity cards to open accounts or perform other business. Dishonest employees might then try to sell them to scammers (骗子).

    Galdwell's book, Blink, is all about first impressions and what he calls “rapid cognition（认知）”. In his own words, “It's a book about the kind of thinking that happens in a short time. When you meet someone for the first time or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions.”

    Galdwell points out that most scientific tradition is based on a great deal more than two seconds' thought though years of scientific study can come from a quick observation. As for rapid cognition, Gladwell realizes some first impressions don't seem to be based on anything. He noticed that Americans support taller candidates（候选人）. In fact, since 1900, only four candidates have beaten men who are taller than themselves. With this in mind Gladwell got in touch with 500 companies in the US and found that almost all of their managers were tall. Gladwell said, “That's weird. There is no connection between height and intelligence or height and decision-making…But for some reason companies chose tall people for leadership roles. I think that's an example of bad rapid cognition.”

    As an example of good rapid cognition, he tells the story of the Emergency Room doctors at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. A few years ago, the hospital changed the way they diagnosed（诊断）heart attacks. Their doctors took no notice of the patient's age, weight and medical history and gave most of their attention to a few really important pieces of information, such as blood pressure and heart rate. And what happened? Cook County is now one of the best places in the United States for diagnosing chest pain.

    Gladwell believes the power of first impressions should be studied further. “The first task of Blink is to show the fact: decisions made very quickly can be as good as decisions made slowly and carefully.”

    At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.

    But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers: while many of them wanted to stay close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of me going away, she was supportive and excited for me.

    One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards; getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A's.

    I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what's important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I have turned out so strong and independent.

    Once an Englishman named Jack Brown went to Russia for a holiday. He stayed there for several months and then came home again. Some of his friends visited him a few days after he got back. "I had a very dangerous trip while I was in Russia," Jack said to them. "I wanted to see a friend of mine in the country and the bad weather made me very late. So I was still traveling through a forest in a sleigh(雪橇) when the sun went down. It was a long way from my friend's house when about twenty wolves began to follow my sleigh. It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves. The noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, gray forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were near us. They were running very fast, and they didn't seem to get tired like the horses."

    "What did you do?" one of Jack's friends asked.

    "When the wolves got very near," Jack answered, "I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh got away from them for a few minutes."

    "Then they finished their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow now, and after a few minutes I saw them running among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it."

    "The same thing happened again and again, and my horses became more and more tired and ran slower and slower until, after about two hours, only one wolf was still alive and following us."

An international team of astronomers used a database combining observations from the best telescopes in the world {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (detect) the signal from the active supermassive black holes of dying galaxies（星系） in the early universe. The {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (appear) of these active supermassive black holes is related to changes in the host galaxy. This means a black hole could have far reaching effects {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the evolution of its host galaxy.

The Milky Way Galaxy {#blank#}4{#/blank#} we live includes stars of various ages, including stars still forming. But in some other galaxies,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (know) as elliptical（椭圆的） galaxies, all of the stars are old and about the same age. This indicates that early in {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (they) histories elliptical galaxies had a period of rich star formation that suddenly ended. Why this star formation stopped in some galaxies {#blank#}7{#/blank#} not others is not well understood. One possibility is that a supermassive black hole disrupts（瓦解） the gas in some galaxies,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (create) an environment unsuitable for star formation.

To test this theory, astronomers look at distant galaxies. Due to the limited speed of light, it takes time for light to travel across the void of space. The light we saw last night from an object 10 billion light years away {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (travel) for 10 billion years to reach Earth. Thus the light we see today shows us what the galaxy looked like when the light left that galaxy 10 billion years ago. So looking at distant galaxies is like looking back in time. But the longer distance also means that distant galaxies look {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (small), making study more difficult.
