Years ago, my father and I were on a summer road trip from Dallas to Austin. On our way back, the battery meter (电池电量计) seemed to act funny, jumping up then dropping down. 

We stopped to buy a new battery and replaced (替换) the 1 one in the parking lot. And we went on our trip. We got about 20 miles outside the city when our car died. Then we 2 it was not the problem of the battery. We had to 3 on the side of the road. My father 4 the car and repaired it on his own, but it still didn't work. 

We were about to call for help when a 5 stopped in front of our car. A man got out and started walking towards us. He asked us what the problem was. My father 6 that our car was dead. The man said he had a tow chain (拖链) and would be able to tow us to Dallas, which was about 200 miles away. We agreed and thanked him. 

Then my father stayed in our car, and I got on the truck. Later I learned the 7 of the truck driver. About a year ago, he was told by the doctor that he had lung cancer (肺癌), and his days were 8 . Instead of doing treatment (治疗), he decided to accept the fact and spend the rest of his life driving all over Texas, and 9 people who were in need. 

I can't remember his name anymore, but I'll never 10 him helping us that night.

Nüwa is an ancient goddess in traditional Chinese stories. She is best known for creating human beings and repairing the pillars (柱子) of heaven. 

In Huainanzi, the four pillars supporting heaven were {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, a fire burned and a flood troubled human beings. Nüwa smelted (熔炼) a five-colored stone to {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the sky and saved plenty of lives. Then, she {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the rest of the stone on the earth, which turned into all kinds of jade (玉). The five-colored stone stands for the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} basic elements (元素) making up life: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. 

According to the tale of the five colored stone, many stories have been created in Chinese {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. In A Dream of Red Mansions by Cao Xueqin, the hero Jia Baoyu {#blank#}6{#/blank#} an incarnation (化身) of a piece of the magical five-colored stone left by Nüwa. He was named Baoyu, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} he was born with a beautiful jade in his mouth. In Journey to the West, the main character Monkey King was described as a creation out of a {#blank#}8{#/blank#} from at mountain and had super powers at birth. 

Nüwa is believed to be the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} of Chinese people. In traditional Chinese stories, human beings nearly disappeared after terrible natural disasters (灾难). Nüwa and Fuxi were the only two left on earth. To remain reproduction (繁衍), she {#blank#}10{#/blank#} Fuxi and gave birth to the earliest Chinese.

The artwork on the right is made from waste . It was created by Pascale MarthineTayou,{#blank#}1{#/blank#} artist from WestAfrica. He often used recycled waste materials such as plastic bags , or things collected on his travels to make the artwork:.

By using these materials ,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(he ) works question environmental problems like global waste . Pascale 's artwork Plastic Bog Tree is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( place ) in art galleries(美术馆) . The branches(树枝) are covered in brightly coloured plastic {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(bag ). The colourful trees remind people of the increasing waste {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the poor relationship the modern world has with nature .

Humans invented plastic but it has a much {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(long ) life than its inventors. We can make choices about {#blank#}7{#/blank#} we buy . And we can buy less .

An English philosopher called Mary Wollstonecraft , who was born in 1759, was very {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( interest ) in how people spent their money . She {#blank#}9{#/blank#}( try) to encourage people to think hard about what they really needed before they made the decision to buy. If we buy less , then we waste less!So, reducing waste is not a new idea but it is one that we need to think about {#blank#}10{#/blank#}( creative ), because now there is much waste that Mary would never have imagined !

Aladdin made a wish to the magic lamp, "Please build a beautiful palace next to the king's palace." The next morning, the king found a new palace and a golden walkway between his palace and the new palace. The king met Aladdin at the door when he went to see the new building. Aladdin said, "My Lord, this is my present to the princess. In this way, you can still see each other even after she is married." The king was touched by Aladdin and agreed to let Aladdin marry his daughter.

The wedding of Aladdin and the princess was big and celebrated by the whole city. The magician (魔法师) heard this and decided to bring the lamp back. He made several beautiful lamps and then went to Aladdin and the princess's palace. He talked to their servants, "Do you have any old lamps? You can exchange them for my new lamps because I'm interested in royal(皇家的) things." The servants rushed to tell the/princess the strange news. The princess agreed and asked them to take Aladdin's lamp to the magician because she believed it was just a common old lamp.

After getting the lamp, the magician quickly made a wish, "Take me home with Aladdin's palace and the princess." When Aladdin got home at night he found the palace and the princess were gone. "Maybe the wicked(恶的) magician was back," he thought. Aladdin felt very sad. Suddenly, he remembered the magic ring:

Aladdin asked the ring to bring his wife and palace back.

 "I'm afraid I can't. It depends upon the magic lamp." replied the ring.

"But at least you can take me to my wife wherever she is."

Then Aladdin was placed upon an area facing the princess's flat. The princess told Aladdin what happened that night through the window of the flat.

"Where did he put the lamp?" Aladdin asked.

The princess replied, "He takes it with him all the time."

Aladdin was glad when hearing that. Then he passed the princess a small bottle and told her his plan.

That evening, the princess invited the magician to have a great meal. The magician became relaxed when seeing the delicious food and wine(葡萄酒). The princess then filled his cup with wine, again and again, so he soon got drunk. At this time, she secretly put something that Aladdin gave her into the magician's cup. He drank and soon fell asleep. After that, Aladdin came in. He found the lamp and made a wish. Finally, Aladdin and the princess got home safely. The magician was put in prison.

From then on, they lived a happy life and they did many good things for people with the help of the magic lamp.

Once upon a time, a wise Greek man named Thales came to Egypt. Thales was good at maths. He also loved solving puzzles and finding out how things worked. One day, he visited the Great Pyramid. It was the tallest building he had ever seen. After enjoying its beauty, he wondered how tall the pyramid was. He asked the locals, but nobody knew.

Thales thought about this question day and night. One night, when he was enjoying the moonlight, he came to realize that everything has a shadow when the sun shines. An idea hit him," If I can measure(测量) the pyramid's shadow, I can figure out its height!"

So, Thales waited patiently until the sun was just right. He stood next to the pyramid and measured his own shadow. Then, he measured the pyramid's shadow. Thales was about 6 feet tall, and his shadow was 2 feet long. The ratio(比例) was 3:1. The pyramid's shadow was much longer, about 120 feet. Thales realized that the pyramid's height equals 120 multiplied by 3.

Finally, at lunchtime, Thales declared the Great Pyramid's height—____ feet. Everyone was amazed. Thales used his wisdom to solve the puzzle.

Today is Saturday. It's half past seven in the evening. Rick is in the living room reading a book. He is reading the story of a young man called Yang Zhiyang from Baoji, Shaanxi. 

Yang Zhiyang is 23 years old. His mum has ALS(渐冻症) and she has difficulty speaking and walking. Yang's father has to work to make money for the family. So Yang doesn't go to work. He has to take care of(照顾) his mum at home. 

To take good care of his mother, Yang looks at her eyes very often. When his mother wants to sleep, she looks at her room. Then, Yang takes her to the bedroom. When she wants to drink water, she looks at the water cup on the table. Then, Yang gets water for her. It's important for people with ALS to do exercise. Yang always takes his mother's hands and does exercise with her. To make it fun, Yang often sings to her. 

Taking care of the mother with ALS is not easy, but Yang says, "She is my mother. I'm just doing what a son needs to do. I want to do my best to help her live happily. "
