B.阅读下面短文,然后根据括号内所给汉语意思写出单词的正确形式(每空一词)。

The British (文化) of visiting friends is special. In Britain you may often hear "Drop in any time" or "Come to see me soon", but you can (几乎不) do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome.

Here are some (建议). You'd better telephone before visiting someone as a  (客人;宾客). If you receive an invitation that says "RSVP", you should reply to let the host know (是否) or not you plan to go. By (联系;交流)with the host, you can avoid some displeasure. You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may say something to (拒绝), like "Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come." The host may (期盼;等待) you to tell them as soon as possible if you aren't able to go after accepting the invitation.

Although it is not always necessary to give a gift to your host, it is (确定的;无疑的) that you are polite to do so. Also, the more (积极的;活跃的) you are, the sooner you will get on well with others. After the visit, a thank-you note or telephone call is a good way to show your thanks.

tests     same     out     refuse     with     heavier   or   healthy   like     four

There are many colors in nature. But do you think that a color has weight? Let's do a test.

First, put two objects with the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Third, wrap (包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with white. Now hold the boxes {#blank#}2{#/blank#} your hand one by one. Which one is {#blank#}3{#/blank#} ? It is certain that you will think the red one is heavier. Why do you think so? A scientist did many {#blank#}4{#/blank#} and found that different colors have different weights in a man's mind.

Also, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be {#blank#}6{#/blank#} by using the colors you like. Or you'll be nervous {#blank#}7{#/blank#} even get ill. For example, you {#blank#}8{#/blank#} blue and hate red. If you stay in a room with red windows and wallpaper for two hours, you'll feel you have been there for {#blank#}9{#/blank#} hours. But if the room is blue, you'll feel you have been there for only an hour, And, if a person walks {#blank#}10{#/blank#} of a blue room and into a red room, his temperature will rise. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.

①A tree has roots(根). People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It's the same thing with words.

②As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives(侦探)looking for information to discover the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to

understand what it means.

③As you know, prefixes (前 缀) and suffixes(后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will be able to build the word. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these and remember them, and you will become good at guessing the meaning of words.

④Let's look at one common root word used in English. "Alter"from the Latin word means "other". When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with "other". Examine the word "alternate".Can you find the Latin root in it?

●If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.

●If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.

●If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.

⑤Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your "rooting for words"skills, Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
