"Someone once asked me, 'What's the tool you would want to give any student'? And I said, 'A mask and snorkel (潜水通气管) set, "' the ocean biologist Thys says in a video. And Thys explains, "Ninety-eight percent of the living space on this planet is the ocean. It's worth a view. "

Thys has devoted her career to seeing the ocean and to helping others watch the great diversity of the underwater world. A big part of what motivates her work is the chance to let people develop a sense of respect for the grandness of the ocean, and to get people to participate in efforts to protect endangered ocean ecosystems.

Since studying ocean biology, Thys has focused her research on how sea animals live. One animal she particularly studies is the ocean sunfish. "It's so different from any other fish, "says Thys. "It looks like a mistake. Where does the tail go?" Thys adds. "The sunfish provides an entry point to understanding more about the behavior of creatures in the ocean, and about how environmental changes impact underwater ecosystems. "

Thys's work also takes her above ground, where she's looking at ways to create new connections between human populations and natural environments to help address social and environmental challenges. For instance, she's working on nature's effects on mental well-being.

Thys's passion for her work is evident in every lecture, video, and public appearance she makes. Using the media, Thys encourages people to learn about the ocean and love it. Due to many ocean research projects and activities from the media, Thys is up to her neck in work every day. She could hardly spare plenty of time for a good rest. Thys's devotion to her work as an ocean scientist and ecological warrior is infectious. She's a role model and an inspiring guide to ocean life.

(1)、 Why would Thys like to send students a mask and snorkel set? (no more than 8 words)
(2)、 What greatly motivates Thys's work according to Paragraph 2? (no more than 10 words)
(3)、What does Thys think of the ocean sunfish? (no more than 10 words)
(4)、What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 5 words)
(5)、What's your attitude towards Thys and her work? (no more than 20 words)

Mass media are tools of communication.Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered(分散的)audience. They extend our ability to talk to each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space.

There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us.

First, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to get on our own.

Second, mass media help us to arrange our time and life.  What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in the newspapers or on TV.Because we are exposed(暴露)to different points of view through different kinds of media every day,we are able to evaluate(评价)all sides of a certain issue.

Third, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertising through the media.Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements.Though many advertising may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.

Fourth, the media also entertain.  All of the media make some efforts to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is primarily a medium of information,it also contains entertainment features(特征).Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is estimated that in the future, the entertainment function of mass media will become even more important than it is now.

BERLIN—A German woman, fearful that a burglar was trying to break into her second -storey apartment, called police after she heard someone climbing up to her balcony shortly after midnight, police said Thursday. Police discovered the “burglar” was a man carrying flowers and a bottle of wine who turned out to be the woman's boyfriend. But then arrested him on an outstanding reason.

“He was trying to surprise her with the flowers and a bottle of wine but it all went wrong,” said Korbach police spokesman Volker Koenig. He said the man jumped down from the balcony and tried to escape but was quickly caught by police.

“He gave the police who were taking him to jail the bottle of wine as a gesture of thanks for the friendly treatment after the arrest. ” Koenig said.

In the early 1980s, one of our neighbors asked my mom if she would make a few gift baskets for her to give as gifts for the holidays. My mom agreed and news of the unique gift baskets my mum was making spread like wildfire throughout the neighborhood. My mum was busy throughout the holiday season, so she asked a friend to help her. When the orders continued after the holiday season for baby gifts, birthday gifts and more, it occurred to them that maybe this job could be turned into a business and they did it.

My mum went into her business because she had a creative idea. She got orders and filled orders. But there was no purpose and no real strategy(策略). In 1991, my mum's partner got into financial trouble and there was not enough money to support either my mum or her partner.

So if you are led by your creativity or enthusiasm, make sure you ask yourself what you want out of your business. If you don't set goals, how will you know what direction to go in? Do you want to create jobs and growth in the economy? Are you looking for a hobby? You can't keep scores if you don't know what game you are playing.

After my mom's partner gave up, she had to abandon(抛弃) her business to support herself. She swore(发誓)she would run a business again and do it differently the next time. However, there wasn't a "next time" for her. She passed away just after her 51st birthday. She never had someone tell her how important having a goal was. She never had an opportunity to be everything that she could be.

There are no right or wrong goals, only the ones that matter to you. Set them so that you can make progress and achieve success, whatever that may mean to you.

Emilia Dobek traces her interest in space and the universe back to third grade when she and her father watched a blood moon — a total lunar eclipse (月食) — on the roof of their house.

Now a seventh grader at East Prairie Elementary School, Dobek recently won the national Discovery Education Lockheed Martin Beyond Challenge by designing a space station for travelling to Mars.

She says that night watching the lunar eclipse started a strong desire in her that has yet to run out of fuel. So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.

"I knew she would love the challenge and that she would go way beyond in her search," Smeeton said. "She immediately started researching bone density (密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars. "

"My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts and make sure their comfort is out of this world," Dobek says.

Dobek's design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or Self-Growing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars.

Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek's design. A simulator (模拟装置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual reality environment. Rooms have circular ceilings so astronauts will be able to watch downloaded shows and even see places on Earth, such as their homes.

"I want to tell other kids to follow their passions," Dobek said. "Whatever they want to do, they should push for it and always try their best."

On a steamy July day in Bayonet Point, Florida, Gene Work and his brother-in-law, Mark Rouco, were resodding(重新铺草皮)Gene's yard.

The lawn had grown 1  in the heat, and the Works had been threatened to accept a huge fine if the situation wasn't remedied. The new sod was sitting in the driveway, but the job was slow-going.

Gene, then 40, wasn't feeling right. He went inside to take a break and 2  on the couch, clutching his chest. His wife, Melissa Work, called 911 quickly. Even though he was 3  down death, Gene had one thing on his mind: that 4 .

If the sod wasn't 5  that day, it would die. "While he was having his heart attack, literally in and out of consciousness, he kept 6  me to have it put down because he didn't want it to go to waste," Melissa wrote in a Facebook post.

Soon Pasco County Fire Rescue arrived and took Gene and Melissa to the hospital, leaving Rouco behind to 7  the yard. Within an hour, he had managed to remove the old grass. He was about to lay the new sod, which he 8  would take him well into the night, 9  two emergency vehicles appeared. Seven men—the same ones who had treated his brother—10 . Gene had told them how 11  he'd wanted to get the sod down, so they had returned to help. The job was done in under two hours. Meanwhile, Gene had surgery to insert stents(支架)in his heart, 12  a potentially deadly blockage.

He's home now, fully recovered—and enjoying his beautiful lawn. The Works are still 13  that those EMTs went above and beyond their job 14 . "These men," Melissa told tampabay.com, "saved Gene's life, and then came back to save his grass. That's just so 15 ."
