The Benefits(益处)of Doing More than You Are Paid for

One rainy afternoon an old lady walked into a Philadelphia department store.Most of the clerks ignored(忽略)her,1only one young man asked if he could help her.She replied that she was just 2for the rain to stop.He told her he wouldn't try to3her anything she didn't want.Instead he brought her4.

When the rain stopped,the lady5the young man and asked for his card.A few months passed,the owner of the store received6inviting this young man to Scotland to get orders for providing goods for a large company!The letter was7the old lady for whom the clerk had provided a chair.She happened to be owner's mother of the large company,8

When the young clerk had his bags packed for Scotland,he had already been one of the9in that department store,all because he had shown a little10to a stranger when no one else would.

    Will you put others' needs before your own? What 1 will you get if you do? Here is an experience of mine.

    It was a wet day and I had a 2time. I was busy and everyone I talked to was in a bad mood(心情). What's more, I went out without breakfast and I left my 3at home. So I couldn't get lunch and was terribly hungry.

    When I finished my work, I 4to ask my wife to meet me at the door with some money so that I could quickly go to buy 5. Then I quickly made my way home in hope of eating my 6meal of the day at 5:00 p.m.

    As I was halfway home, my wife told me by phone that a friend of ours was in 7and needed a lift(搭便车)home. My mind said, “I will get him 8I get the meal.” But my mouth said, “All right, I'll give him a 9”

    He jumped in the car with a smile on his face and repeated how 10he was that I would drive him home. He told me he usually walked home from his company but that day the 11stopped him from making that journey.

    Traffic was 12. A drive to his home normally took 10 minutes, but that day it took 30 minutes.

    Now you would guess the person that I was helping is a 13friend of mine. But, in fact, he is a friend of a friend's.

    I wonder if I will ever see this person again, but I feel glad I was there when he 14me.

    So you will feel yourself helpful and useful when you 15more about others.

    One day, when a successful businessman opened the door of his car, a dog sleeping 1his car suddenly came out and bit (咬) his leg!  He threw a stone at the dog,2he was not able to hit it. How angry he was!

    Upon3his office, the businessman called a meeting of the workers. He took out his anger(愤怒) on them. Gradually, the businessman's anger4the company.

    The businessman was still angry after returning home. His wife asked him, "Why are you so late today?" The man5, "I didn't go to the office to play soccer. I went to work. So don't ask such stupid questions!"

    His wife was troubled about being shouted at6. She turned her anger on their son who was watching TV. "This is all you do. You have no 7 in studying!  Turn off the TV now!" she shouted.

    The son became8as well. He walked out of his house and saw a dog passing by. He picked up a stone and threw it at the dog9. The dog ran away, barking(犬吠) in pain.

    Sometimes, when we are angry about something, we might take out our anger on 10. We should learn to control our anger.

    I grew up in a poor family where none of us kids believed in Santa Claus. My parents refused to let us believe in him. They couldn't provide us 1 expensive presents. And they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as other kids who, on Christmas morning, found all kinds of toys under the tree that were 2 to be left by Santa Claus.

    That year when Christmas came, we had no money at all. On Christmas Eve, Dad took us three kids out into the night one after 3. I had a blanket (毛毯) with me, and when it was my turn, I offered to share it with Dad, but he said," No, thanks. "The 4 never troubled him. I sat next to Dad and we looked up at the sky.

    "Pick out your 5 star. It'll be your Christmas present," Dad said.

    "You can't give me a star! No one owns a star. "

    "That's right," Dad said. "No one else owns a star. You just have to claim(认领) it 6 anyone else does , just like Columbus claimed America. "

    I 7 it for a while. "I want that one," I said.

     "That's Venus(金星). It is a planet. It shines only from reflected (反射的) light. "I like it anyway," I said.

    "It's Christmas. You can have a planet if you want. "

    That evening, we discussed outer space and I realized Dad was a man with much 8 of the stars and planets. We all 9 about the other kids who believed in Santa Claus and got nothing for Christmas but some cheap plastic toys. "Years from now, when all that they got are broken and long forgotten," Dad said.     Daniel is one of my friends. Last week he got an award because he 1 the police catch a robber(抢劫犯).

    Daniel was on his way home from a party that evening. It was 2 and there were not many people on the bus. He sat in the 3 row on the bus. He found a man in front of him a little strange. Daniel 7 see what the man was like. So be walked to the front of the bus. He took a close look at the man when he was walking 8 him. Daniel was surprised. The man was the robber he saw in the newspaper. He was wanted(被通缉)by the police.

    Daniel got off the bus at the next bus stop and called the police. The police came soon and 9 the bus. Then they caught the robber.

    It was l sunny Sunday afternoon. John's parents were not in. John decided to go to the Happy Theater to watch a talent show, so he 1. Only Barky, John's pet 2stayed at home. He took out the money, but as he was leaving, he 6 a dog's barking (叫声). He looked around and found Barky looking at him angrily. He was very scared.

    Barky was about to bite (咬) him when John came home. John let Barky sit down and told the bad person, "Come with me to the 7, or Barky will bite out!" So the bad person had to 8 John to the police station with Barky close behind. A 9put handcuffs on (给...戴上手铐) the bad person after John told him the thing.
