    When I was a little girl, my father loved to play catch (抛接球游戏) with me. I wasn't very good, but he would encourage me. He was always telling me “keep your eye on the ball” as I would not be able to catch even the easiest of throws.

    As I got older, we didn't play catch as much. If I had a problem, I would go to my father to ask for his advice. He would try to joke with me and say “keep your eye on the ball”. We would both laugh because usually that advice did not apply to(适用于) the problem, but he would try to make me smile.

    My father became ill in 1995 when I was 23. As he suffered from a stroke (中风), he could not speak. There weren't any more conversations. He could only mouth words, which were sometimes hard to understand. After a while, I seemed to be pretty good at reading his lips (嘴唇), even better than the nurses who were caring for him.

    During our last conversation, I was telling him about a problem I was having with my then boyfriend. Once again, I could read his lips： “Keep your eye on the ball.” We both smiled.

    That was the last time I saw my father before he passed away.

    Since then, when I get into a stressful situation I tell myself “keep your eye on the ball”.

     Nancy is an English school girl. She studies in a middle school. She has a little brother. His name is John. John is only four. Nancy likes him very much.

    Today is Sunday. Nancy wants to do her homework. She takes out her pencil-box and opens it. “Oh, dear! Where's my pen?” She can't find her pen. She goes to ask her brother in his bedroom.

   “John! I can't find my pen. Can you see it?  Oh, what are you doing with my pen? ”

   “I'm writing to my friend, Peter.” John answers.

   “But how can you? You don't know how to write! ”

   “It doesn't matter. Peter can't read. ” John says.

    One day, I got off the train and was waiting for my ride .Suddenly I had an inspiration (灵感). I looked around and found a pen, but there was no paper. I sat down sadly for a few minutes.     There was a woman sitting near me. She was also waiting for a ride. She seemed a little bit worried. So I walked up to her and gave the bill to her

    The woman couldn't know what I was doing at first. And then she took a second look and read it. Suddenly she was not worried and she was happy. Also, she gave me a big huge and thanked me.

    I knew that if this was the result from just one person, then this wave of warmth would probably go on.

    My ride came, and we drove off. But I thought this was not the end of the story.

    One day, John read an advertisement in a newspaper. It said "Wanted. The best salesman in the world." John thought he was a great salesman and went to ask for the job. "I'm the best salesman in the world," he said to the manager. "Give me the job."

   "You must prove you're the best," the manager said.

   "OK I will," John said.

   "Good." The manager took several boxes of sweets out of his desk." Last week I bought a thousand boxes of sweets. If yon can sell them all before the end of the week, yon can have the job," said the manager.

   "That's easy," John said. He took the boxes of sweets and left the office.

    Every day and all day he went from shop to shop, trying to sell the sweets. But he couldn't sell one. The sweets were too bad for him to sell. At the end of the week he went back to the manager." I'm sorry, sir," he said," I was wrong about myself. I'm not the best salesman in the world, but I know who is."

   "Oh" said the manager. "Who?"

   "The person who sold you a thousand boxes of the sweets."
