Born into a family of sculptors(雕刻家) in 1983 in Pingyao, Shanxi, Zhang Rong showed an interest in clay figures as a child. "From the age of (八), I would sometimes follow my father when he went to work. At that time, I dreamed of learning his skills," said Zhang.
However, Zhang's parents didn't want him to be a sculptor. They thought that he (应该) pay attention to his studies and go to university. Zhang did as they advised.
Zhang (毕业) from university in 2005 and became a programmer. But he got bored with his work and still dreamed of (创造) clay figures. He began to make clay figures in his spare time to overcome the boredom of his work. He learned the skills he needed in different ways by (他自己). He read books as well as learned from (当地) artists. He also practiced a lot and tried to develop his own style.
(通过) his hard work, Zhang improved his skills over time and won a place among all the sculptors. In 2012, he gave up his job and started his own (事业). His clay figures caught the eye of tourists from home and (国外). Zhang also made clay figures for a few special customers free of charge, such as left-behind seniors and soldiers.
Thanks to Zhang's efforts, Pingyao clay figure sculpting was listed as a city-level cultural treasure in 2015, and he was given the title of city-level inheritor(继承人 ). "(无论何时) I complete a clay piece, I hope to tell more people about the art. It will be my lifelong dream," Zhang said.
Why Live Near the River?
Imagine pioneers traveling west in the 1800s. In those days, it was hard to find running water and shops where to buy things. As time went by, most pioneers had to make their homes near a river so that they could get water easily.
