Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning oi a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

In Western countries, people usually celebrate the New Year at midnight on December 31st--January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟) at midnight. During the first minutes of the New Year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead.  But some cultures prefer to celebrate the New Year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the New Year with the first light of the sunrise.

Many cultures also do special things to get rid of (摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, In Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the New Year.

Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year.  One widespread Spanish tradition for good tuck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at the New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck--but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

The sun is setting,brightening your kids' faces as they play in the waves.You reach for your phone for this perfect moment.But before you do,here's a bit of surprising science:Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.

Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain's ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus,a psychology professor at the University of California

Photos may outsource memories.It works in two ways:We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures,or we're so distracted(分心的)by the process that we miss the moment altogether.

The first explanation is the loss of memory.People know that their camera is recording that moment,so they don't try to remember.Similarly,if you write down someone's phone number(不假思索地)because your brain tells you there's just no need.That's all well and good — until that piece of paper goes missing.

The other is distraction.We're distracted by the process of taking a photo — how we hold our phone,composing the photo,such as smiling faces,all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.

However,taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully.While taking a photo may be distracting,the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides.

When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.

Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos.Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences.Thus,photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.

Memories die away without a visual record backing them up.Therefore,a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully,which is worth exploring further.

"I killed the wrong goose (鹅), " a man complained in his letter about the Xinhua Dictionary. It was the 1970s. The man wanted to kill a male goose. He didn't know the difference between male and female goose, so he turned to the dictionary for help. It read, "The male geese have a yellow bump on their head."

The man chose a goose that matched the description. But when he opened its stomach, many eggs poured out, and the man was angry.

The dictionary wasn't totally wrong. However, it didn't make it clear that all geese have a yellow bump on their head. Males have just bigger ones. The dictionary's editors corrected it in the next edition (版本) .

Since its birth in 1953, the Xinhua Dictionary has been used as an encyclopedia (百科全书) by people across China. More than 600 million copies have been sold.

In 1949, about 80 percent of China's population was uneducated. Xinhua Dictionary succeeded in opening up knowledge to millions of Chinese people. "I had no education when I was little. The dictionary helped me get into high school. " Said a woman in her 50s.

Over the past 50 years, the dictionary has been improved in each edition. "鲟"was once explained as"can be eaten". Later editions made it clear that it was "an animal in danger". The meaning of "豹"is no longer "wild animals whose fur can be made into clothes". New editions have included many new meanings. The character "晒" (to dry something under the sun) , for example, now has a second meaning: to share. Popular expressions like "初心"have also been added to dictionary.

In a way, Xinhua hasn't just explained words; it has shaped the way Chinese people think. According to an article in Southern Weekly, "When children write about a spring outing, the sky is always ‘cloudless for ten thousand miles'. They will always ‘sing and dance' on the way. " "Both sentences, " the editor added, " are from examples in the Xinhua Dictionary."

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

If you go to the Gulf of Mexico, you can see there is a big hole. It is called Chicxulub Crater. Some people believe it was because of a huge asteroid(小行星) hitting this place, and the hit made dinosaurs die out millions of years ago.

This idea was first suggested in 1980. Later, scientists used special tools to find out what would happen if it was true. It showed that the asteroid could hit Earth at 40,000 miles per hour, leading to a big hole, a great tsunami(海啸), earthquakes, and the melting(融化) of tons of rock. The hit took away millions of lives around the Chicxulub Crater.

The terrible story didn't stop there. Minutes later, hot rock started to rain down, and there was deadly dirt everywhere on the ground. More animals were burnt to death. After several hours, a super- hot wind knocked down anything still standing.

In weeks, the sky was full of ash. Days became nights. This covered the sunlight for months or even years. Many plants died first. Then lots of animals died too because of food shortage, including almost all dinosaurs.

Although this idea sounds possible, the question of how dinosaurs died out remains unsolved scientifically. But as scientists discover more dinosaur fossils, we may know the truth one day.
