    One day, a farmer was walking along a road with his son Thomas. The father said, "Look! There's a horseshoe. Pick it up and put it in your bag." Thomas said, "It isn't worth the trouble." When Thomas had eaten up all the cherries, his father said to him, "My dear son, if you had bent down earlier to pick up that horseshoe. it would not have been necessary for you to bend so many times for the cherries. Always remember the lesson that anyone who does not worry about the little things will find that he cannot do the great things.

We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf. It stood outside a furniture（家具）shop. "Buy it,"she said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof-rack（车顶架）. I've always wanted one like that."What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too. As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake（超车）?" Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers（警官）inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church（教堂）. One of the officers came to me. "Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more help now?"I didn't quite understand. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You've been very kind. I live just down the road."He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. "Well, well," he said and laughed. "It's a bookshelf you've got there!     Once there was a forest where all the animals lived happily together. One day a family went to spend the day in the forest, and the son left his socks there. After the family left, a bear came by, found the socks, and decided to try them on. They fit so well, and he liked them so much that he wouldn't take them off.
    All the animals talked about the bear's new look. Soon, in that forest, there began appearing squirrels in shirts, rabbits in shoes, and even rats (老鼠) wearing hats! The forest doctor shook his head, telling animals, "This can't be good. Animals don't need clothes!" But no one listened to him. They said he was just out of fashion.
    However, it wasn't long before the first results of fashion-fever came.     When the animals came to see the doctor, he gave them all the same advice, "Take off those clothes before one day they're going to kill you." Those who listened to the doctor's advice stopped having accidents. And the animals realized that they didn't need clothes at all. Starting to wear them had been very dangerous, and they had only done it to make others admire them, and to get attention.

When the princess(公主)was old enough，King Swan called all me birds to his home．Birds came from everywhere，even from far away．King Swan told his lovely daughter to choose one she liked．She looked over the many birds．Finally,she chose a green long-narked peacock尼(孔雀)．She told her father，"This bird，the peacock，will be my husband．"

Hearing that me peacock was the lucky one，all me other birds crowded around to congratulate(祝贺)him．The excited peacock said nothing but held his head high．Later he began to shout and show his beauty in a strange dance．The other birds strange to laugh．

King Swan was angry．Standing in the middle of the birds，he said，"Sir Peacock，your voice is sweet,and you're really very pretty.But you are not modest at all．I will not allow my daughter to marry you!"

The princess also learned she was wrong．Then King Swan married his daughter to a modest bird．The peacock flew away，having lost a beautiful wife．

The king was quite satisfied with David's honesty. Although he did not choose David as the new king, he gave David a job as a judge(法官). He believed that David's honesty would make him the right person to make sure the justice(公正)in the country.
