任务型阅读

The lifestyle of families has changed because of science and industry(工业).

More Americans used to live on farms, nearly each family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Uncles and aunties often lived nearby, too. But when industry became more important than agriculture(农业)in American life, families became smaller, industry needs lots of workers. They must be ready and able to move off the land and move again whenever necessary. It isn't easier for large families to move from place to place as small families can. Today, more and more small families have appeared, smaller families may have no children and they may have only a man and a woman because keeping children is really hard work. It takes parents not only money and time, but also much more energy and makes young couples(夫妇)busy working, studying and enjoying their lives all day. They are probably not important in keeping children.

That's why the increasing of population in most developed countries are becoming more and more slowly, In China today, each family has only one healthy child because of one-child policy.

In this way, the country can develop farther than before and young children can have more opportunities to get education and to find suitable jobs.

(1)、Did each family only have one child in the past?

(2)、Why have the families become smaller and smaller?

(3)、What may a smaller family have?

(4)、Who did parents and their children use to  live with?

(5)、which countries' population increases faster, developed countries or developing countries?

Headphones are helpful. They are good for blocking out noise. And we use them to listen to music no influencing others. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.

How Hearing Works

An ear has many working parts. Their job is to tum sound into something your brain can understand. And there are cells (细胞) inside the car that help you hear. "We call them hair cells," Jackie Clark says. "They look like hairs standing up." Clark is a professor at the University of Texas, She studies how loud noises affect (影响) our ears.

Sound moves and makes the hair cells move back and forth. Loud noises can damage (损害) these cells by getting them not straight anymore. Once the cells arc damaged, they don't grow back.

One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus. It's a ringing in the cars. "It's like someone is playing the violin for a long time," Clark says. "It's difficult to get away from it." And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause worries and stress.

How can you protect your ears? Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And other people shouldn't hear noise from your headphones.

Measuring(测量) Sound

Sounds or noises are everywhere. Raindrops are 40 decibels (分贝) while fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones? They can go higher than 100 decibels. That's too loud. To protect your ears, keep your headphones at about half volume. And don't listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.

You never know when accidents will happen. It's important to be ready. Here are some survival (生存) skills for you when you are in trouble.

● You are bitten by a snake.

Call 120 for help right away. Don't try to get the venom (毒液) out with your mouth. While waiting for help, wash the bite with water. Keep the bitten area still (静止的) and lower than the heart.

● You are in water with a shark.

Try to keep still. But when it's attacking (攻击) you, hit it in the eyes. A shark isn't interested in going after food that hits back, so it will probably swim away. It's best not to swim alone far from the beach.

● You are face to face with a bear.

Don't run away. The bear will go after you. Lie down and play dead. The bear might come over and check you. Keep calm. With any luck, it will lose interest and leave.

● Your car is going down in the water.

First, open the windows. Then open the doors and get out of the car quickly. If you can't open the windows, try to break them. Stay calm.

● You are in a storm.

Don't stay in high places or open ground. Don't stand under a tree. It's better to stand inside a large building than a small one. Don't pick up a telephone.
