Abingdon School Open Day

    The Open Day this year will be on Saturday, 1 October 2011. The Open Day is for all the family, with activities and displays(展示) about all aspects(方面) of the school. All the teachers, students and parents will attend. The day starts at 9:30 a. m. and finishes at 2:30 p.m.  You are welcome to arrive at any time during the lessons in the morning and afternoon. Please read the outline of Open Day events.

    If you can't come to the Open Day, that's all right. There are many other chances(机会) to visit Abingdon School

    St Helen School and St Katharine School Open Day will be on the same date, so you can also visit those two.

    Parking at the school on the Open Day may be limited(有限的), so you can also park your cars in Lotus Supermarket's car park.  It's just a three-minute walk away.

    China has a very long history. It has many great traditional skills that have a wide influence (影响). Here we mainly talk about kites.

    The earliest mention of a kite in ancient China dates back to the 5th century BC. It was made of wood and used as a rescue signal (求救信号).

    At the time between 770 and 221 BC, Chinese kites were actually called "muyuan". They were first invented in Shandong Province for military purposes (军事目的). The kites were used to send important messages during the Chu-Han War. During the Tang Dynasty, kites were made of lighter materials, such as bamboo, silk and paper. At that time, people began to fly kites for other purposes. It was believed that letting go of the kite could remove bad luck and illness.

    Today, kite-flying is an interesting and healthy activity in China. There are large kite-flying festivals held throughout the country, and kite makers can show off their skills during the festivals.

    Maybe a lot of thin people will be worried about their health if the inside fat matters.

    Some doctors now think that the inside fat around important organs like the heart or liver could be as dangerous as the outside fat which can be noticed more easily.

    "Being thin doesn't surely mean you are not fat," said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College. Since 1994, Bell and his team have tested nearly 800 people with MRI to create "fat maps" showing where people store fat.

    According to the result, people who keep their weight through the food they usually eat rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits (堆积物) of inside fat, even if they are thin.

   Even people with normal Body Mass Index (体重指数) scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 per cent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of inside fat. Men were nearly 60 per cent.

    According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the stomach first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.

    Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of inside fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes (糖尿病). They want to prove that inside fat does harm to the body's communication systems.

    The good news is that inside fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your eating habits. "If you want to be healthy, there is no other way. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle," Bell said.

Sugar figurines (糖人) is a kind of traditional Chinese folk art with a long history of hundreds of years. It was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}( wide) loved by most children. Do you know{#blank#}2{#/blank#} to blow a sugar figurine?

Xiong Chuanfa, a figurine maker, can show you {#blank#}3{#/blank#} process. Syrup (糖浆) is necessary for making perfect sugar figurines. He first {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ( heat) sugar s yrup to the required temperature. Then he turns the s yrup into a ball with a hole in the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( central) and presses its edges (边角) together to form a tube(管). Next, Xiong starts to turn the sugar ball into different{#blank#}6{#/blank#}( shape) by blowing air into the tube. Sometimes more materials will be put in to make colorful sugar figurines.

Many people show great interest {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Xiong's" magic show", including Ngendakumana from Burundi. He wanted to make a Bing Dwen Dwen by {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( he). However, it's {#blank#}9{#/blank#}( easy) to see than to do. With Xiong's help, he finally succeeded in {#blank#}10{#/blank#}( produce) a sugar horse.

For years, Xiong's family have been trying their best to protect such folk art from disappearing.
