    Summer schools Summer vacation means long days, sleeping in or enjoying the summer sun. It is quite true for students to enjoy a rest after a long and difficult year. But more and more parents fear their kids forgetting a lot of knowledge, so they send their children to summer schools. Because summer schools can help children go over the knowledge that they have learnt during the school year.

    In summer schools, students probably study in a more relaxing situation and can come up with interesting topics for discussion with their teachers. Summer schools are usually expensive. They usually offer only a few subject. So many students have to take classes that they don't like.

    A summer school can be a good chance for students who need it, but it can be difficult for students who need a rest. So you can decide whether a summer school is suitable for your children.

    Yu Minhong, president of New Oriental Education, shared his ideas with the young after the English speech competition of the 14th China Daily. Here is some of his advice to young people:

    “One suggestion I'd like to give you is that it's important to do what you like without fear of failure. And the process（过程）of working toward your dreams matters more than the results. Young people should take chances to show off talents. Take competitions like this one as an example: If you are afraid to fail, you'll never get the chance to stand on the stage and make a speech. Above all, it's most important to take part.

    Another suggestion I want to give you is to read books. It is not easy to keep reading every day. For me, it is much more difficult and challenging to keep reading and taking notes every day than it is to walk 10,000 steps.”

    In his speech, Yu also shared his view on life. He chose a different life rather than a more successful one. He uses the famous lines of American poet Robert Frost (1874–1963) to make his point:“Two roads diverged (分叉) in a wood, and I … took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”Yu pointed out, “Your happiness should not be what others think you should run after, but instead you should decide what it is. It is you who should make choices for your own life.”

    Peter plays basketball for the kids basketball club. He usually gets up at 5:30 and runs in his school from 5:40 to 6:40.After running, he has breakfast at 7 o'clock. For breakfast, he eats some eggs and vegetables. At 8:00,he plays basketball with his friends. They play for a long time. At about 12:00,they have lunch. For lunch, Peter has lots of vegetables, chicken and fruit. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Peter goes to the kids basketball club. Peter has dinner at about 7:00 in the evening. At first he thought it was orange and white, and it was coming closer and closer. Then it stopped a few metres above the ground. He saw two people inside. They had big ears and small eyes, but no hair. Tom thought they were aliens. He had a camera with him then, but he was too scared to take a photo. Then he began to feel weak and fell to the ground. An hour later, he woke up. He found himself lying on the grass in front of his house. He couldn't explain how he got there. Of course he told his friends about this strange experience. China has put in place a new policy（政策） that young people are not allowed to play online video games more than three hours a week. The new1 ask those who are under age 18 to play online games for no more than one hour in the evening on Fridays，weekends and public holidays.

Gianni Golfera is in front of a group of people. His eyes are covered, but he can still show these people something that's amazing. First, the people choose sixty numbers as they like. After that, a helper reads the numbers to Gianni. Then, after hearing them just a single time, Gianni repeats the numbers in the correct order from memory. Then, he does it again—backwards!

Memory is very difficult to understand. Scientists don't really know how it works, yet. The Golfera family genes (基因) may hold important information about Gianni's memory. A scientist called Antonic Malgaroli plans to compare the Golfera family's genes with the genes of more forgetful families. "The question," says Dr. Malgaroli. "is how much it's really because of the Golfera family genes, and how much comes from his practice."

Researchers are now studying how memory and learning change the brain. They are also trying to match those changes to genes. Some research already shows that a great memory may not depend on the right DNA only. According to Dr. Malgaroli, "If you really need to use your brain to store some kind of information, you have this ability. It's just a matter of exercise." That is, practice and exercising the brain can improve the memory!

The same idea is true for Gianni. His genes are only part of the story. Since the age of 11, he's been training his brain to remember more and more. He practices continuously to improve the power of his memory. Gianni thinks about memory, and works on it, all the time. However, Gianni's life is not all about science. He has a normal life, just like other people. So, researchers think Gianni's memory is mainly because of his very hard work. Gianni agrees.

Gianni believes if there is a memory gene, he probably has it. But the success of Gianni may be more about practice and hard work than DNA. At the same time, he might just be showing scientists that a great memory can be made and not just born!
