Environmental protection is one of the hottest topics nowadays. It was also something that ancient Chinese paid great attention to. In fact, the world's earliest environmental protection idea, ministry （部门） and law were all born in China. How did the ancient Chinese protect the environment?

The world's earliest idea of "managing state affairs（政事）through environmental protection"

Xunzi, a famous thinker in the Warring States Period, came up with the idea of "managing state affairs through environmental protection". He wrote in his book that vegetation（植被）should be protected well by humans.

Guan Zhong, a government officer 400 years ahead of Xunzi, was also an environmental protection expert. He said "a king who cannot protect his vegetation is not doing a good job".

The world's earliest environmental protection ministry"

Nine ministries set up by Shim, an ancient Chinese emperor, included "Yu"（虞） , an environmental protection ministry. Hie first " Yu'' leader was Boyi, an environmental protection expert. He invented wells so people could drink clean water. He knew a lot about animals and also called for animal protection.

The world's earliest "environmental protection law"

Over 4, 000 years ago, Dayu, an ancient Chinese water-control expert and also an emperor, made a rule, not allowing people to cut down trees in March or catch fish in June, because it was the time when they grew quickly.

Almost 3,000 years ago, Tianlv, the first environmental protection law, appeared in Qin. It recorded many ancient environmental protection rules. Two of them were interesting: firstly, rivers should not be blocked（堵塞）; secondly, grass and trees should not be burned to be fertilizer （肥料）except for summer. The second one is inspiring even for today. It can help to keep air clean and fresh.

Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house when I saw two birds, each about 60 centimeters tall, standing on the path. They didn't seem to 1 me until I was right in front of them and then they at once moved 2 into the bushes.

I was quite excited by the idea of two birds making a nest (巢) in my front yard, although I didn't really expect it 3 wild birds don't usually nest so close.

A few weeks later, the birds 4 again. I found them crouching (蜷缩) beside a tree off to the side of the path. As I moved nearer to them, I imagined that they would 5 like they did last time. But 6 they stuck out their heads and made a threatening (威胁的) croaking (呱呱叫) sound. It seemed to warn me not to go any 7 .

I didn't know 8 they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery — they had 9 small baby birds. 

As I moved quietly towards the birds, 10 not to make any sudden movements, they started their croaking again. They straightened their necks forward so they seemed 11 and more threatening. The mother carefully crouched down over the two chicks, and 12 them well in her feathers. 

I was watching them with 13 when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this as a threat and the father raced towards me, 14 his wings to protect the mother and the chicks while making himself appear larger. 

I was 15 to have surprised them and left quickly. I was amazed by their fearless actions. Their parental natural ability kicked in and made them so brave. It is hard not to respect nature. 

Peter lived in a village. He was sad recently because he thought that he had 1 left. One day, Peter went to ask a wise man 2  help. He said to the wise man, "I don't have anything left, so I don't want to live. " The wise man said, "I'm sorry to hear that. " Then the wise man took a piece of paper and drew a straight line down the middle. He explained that he would write down the things Peter had lost on the left side and the things Peter still had on the right side. The wise man asked, "When did your3 leave you?" "What do you mean? They haven't left me. They love me!"

"That's great!" said the wise man. "Then that will be the first thing on the right side ― Family haven't left. Now, do you have freedom?"

"That's a very silly question. Of course I4 !"

"Good! That's the5 one on the right side—You have freedom!" said the wise man, writing it down. 

After Peter was asked some more questions in the same way, he finally understood and smiled. "Things will change when you think of them in a 6 way!" he said. As a matter of fact, change your attitude (态度) and you will change your world. 

Every year the students at Harry's school put on a concert. Their friends and parents go to the concert. Some students sing and dance. Others act in plays.

Harry likes to act. He also likes to write plays. For one concert he wrote a play about a spaceman. He called it Lost in Space. He acted in his play. He was the spaceman.

Harry made his own costume. It was a spacesuit. He used plastic bags to make the pants. He wore a shirt that belonged to his mother. It was an old shirt. It was made of silk. She did not want it anymore.

His shoes were an old pair of his father's. He didn't want them anymore either. They were made of leather.

Harry's helmet was an old motorcycle helmet. 

Harry painted his costume with silver paint. He looked like a spaceman. 

There was only one problem. No one could hear what he said! 

That wasn't a sunny day, but we felt very happy because we went to the Shanghai Waterworks Museum.

First, we went to a grey building. When we entered it, we saw a map on the floor. We met each other happily. On the map there was the Yangtze River, the Huangpu River, and so on. Then, we saw a large fish bowl in the wall. But there were only five plastic(塑料的) fish. That means if we waste water, we will no longer see real fish.

Next, we went upstairs. There we saw a big blue poster. There was a water tap at the top of the poster and the earth was under the water tap(水龙头). It tells us we should save water. The No.3121 water supply station was found on the left side of the poster. An old man was writing on the blackboard. Two women were washing some clothes. At that time, there were stones in the water. The man was writing the number of the stones in the water.

After that, we went to the first floor. We took some photographs there.

We left the museum at eleven o' clock in the morning. Every one of us had I an interesting and meaningful experience that day.

One day, New York was struck(侵袭) by a terrible rainstorm. The streets were full 1  water and the underground system almost came to a stop. 

Unluckily, this happened during the morning rush hours. Many people who were going to work were 2  to go home. Some tried their best to 3  a taxi or to get on a bus. Still others faced the storm 4 . walking miles to get to work. 

I happened to be one of the people on the way to work that morning. I went from an underground line to another only to find that most service had 5 . After making my way through crowds of people, I finally found an underground line that was 6 . 

However, there were so many people waiting to 7  the underground that I could not even get down the stairs to the 8 . So I took the train going in the 9  direction, and then turned back to the downtown train. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the train 10  my stop. Then I had to walk several blocks in the heavy rain. 11  I finally got to my office, I was tired. And I was totally 12  through. 

My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off.
