Qian Zhongshu was a Chinese scholar and writer, known for his wit and erudition(博学). Despite failing in mathematics, Qian {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (success) entered the Department of Foreign Languages under Tsinghua University in 1929 because of his {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (excellence) performance in Chinese and English languages. In Tsinghua, he met his wife Yang Jiang, who was to become a successful playwright and translator, and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (marry) her in 1935. In the same year, Qian received government sponsorship {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (promote) his studies abroad. Together with his wife, Qian headed for the University of Oxford in Britain. After {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (spend) two years at Exeter College, he received a bachelor of literature. He studied for one more year in the University of Paris in France, and he didn't return to China {#blank#}6{#/blank#} 1938.

    Qian lived in Shanghai from 1941 to 1945, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} was then under Japanese occupation. At that time he devoted {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (he) to writing and many of his works were written or published then. A collection of short {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (essay), Writing in the Margins of Life, was published in 1941. His most celebrated work Fortress Besieged appeared in 1947. On the Art of Poetry, written {#blank#}10{#/blank#} classical Chinese was issued in 1948.

    No trip would be complete without experiencing the local food culture. Actually, China has various kinds of delicious food, including a wide variety of local snacks.

    For most of the foreigners I contacted, and myself {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (include), Peking Duck, Mongolian Hot Pot are the favourite Chinese dishes. China is a place {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the food is not only delicious, but the {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(cheap) I've ever found.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} my last night in Beijing before {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (return) to the States, I went to a Peking Duck restaurant that had been suggested for me to try. What a beautiful place! Splendid woodblock prints on the walls, fresh flowers in the vases,  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(attract) silverware (银餐具) and beautiful chopsticks. I was handed {#blank#}7{#/blank#} menu and found most of the prices were especially low for the high quality of the food. The lucky came in whole or half, along with all the little decorations - a little tortilla (玉米粉圆饼) to put the sliced cluck and vegetables in, chopped onion and sauce.

    Anyway, I ordered a whole duck, thinking I'd just take the rest back to my hotel {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(eat) later if I couldn't finish it.{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(believable), in the end there was none of the whole duck {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(leave) on the plate.

    Our local Community Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(be)a member for four years now and I've taken part  {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(competition)and we have even made a video. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} it isn't all just enjoyment; we have started doing social work  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(help) people in our neighborhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a special support group to help young people stop {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(smoke)! We are proud of the most recent group {#blank#}7{#/blank#} we have founded. It organizes regular visits to the local old people's home. The old people, who were very excited by our visit, told us their {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(person) stories. We sang songs and played games with them and had tea together. Some of {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(they) were in poor health and were very unhappy. After this visit, my friends and I  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(decide) that we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.
