It was pouring outside. We all stood there1, some patiently; others annoyed2 nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens3 away the dirt and dust of the world.

    "Mom, let's run through the rain," a girl's voice4 me.

    "No, honey. We'll wait until it5 down a bit," Mom replied.

    The young girl waited about another minute and6: "Mom, let's run through the rain."

    "We'll get wet if we do," Mom said.

    "No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she7her Mom's arm.

    "This morning? 8 did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"

    "Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'If God can get us through this, he can get us through9.'"

    The entire crowd turned10. Mom paused and thought for a moment about11she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. 12 then, we heard, "Honey, you are13. Let's run through the rain. If we get wet, maybe we just need washing," Mom said. Then 14 they ran.

    We all stood15, smiling and laughing as they ran past the cars. Yes, they got wet. But they were16 by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the17to their cars. Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, and they can even take away your18. But no one can take away your precious 19. So, don't forget to make time and take the 20 to make memories every day! I hope you still take the time to run through the rain.

    In our discussion with people on how education can help them succeed in life, a woman remembered the first meeting of an introductory1 course about 20 years ago.

    The professor 2the lecture hall, placed upon his desk a large jar filled with dried beans, and invited the students to 3how many beans the jar contained. After 4 shouts of wildly wrong guesses the professor smiled a thin, dry smile, announced the 5 answer, and went on saying," You have just 6 an important lesson about science. That is: Never 7 your own senses."

    Twenty years later, the 8could guess what the professor had in mind. He 9himself, perhaps, as inviting his students to start an exciting 10 into an unknown world invisible to the 11,which can be discovered only through scientific 12.But the seventeen-year-old girl could not accept or even 13 the invitation. She was just 14 to understand the world. And she 15 that her firsthand experience could be the 16.The professor, however, said that it was 17.He was taking away her only18 for knowing and was providing her with no substitute." I remember feeling small and 19"The woman says," and I did the only thing I could do. I 20 the course that afternoon, and I haven't gone near science since."

    The back door of the ambulance (救护车) was suddenly shut and the driver ran to the front, jumped into his seat, and started the engine. Inside were the 1parents, Mr. and Mrs. Green, the mother holding their baby daughter Ally. The little girl had 2 food stuck in her throat(喉咙) and could hardly breathe.

    The driver, Mr. White, 3 his siren (报警器) and flashing light, and started speeding towards the nearest hospital, fighting against 4. The cars ahead of him pulled out of the way as he drove through the 5. From the back of the 6the parents were shouting at him to 7, since Ally had almost 8 breathing. In front of him he saw some traffic lights, with the red "STOP" light shining. Mr. White knew that he had no time to 9, so he drove straight past the traffic lights, looking 10 his left and right as he did so.

    Coming towards him from his right was a taxi. The driver had the windows 11, since the car was air-conditioned(空调开放的), and he was playing his radio. He did not 12the ambulance. The lights were green, so he drove straight 13 into the path of the ambulance.  Mr. White tried to stop his ambulance but it was too late. It hit the taxi. Everybody was shaken but no one was hurt. Mr. White looked to see 14Ally was. He was astonished to see relief (宽慰) instead of 15on the faces of the parents.

    "Look!" cried Mrs. Green. "She is 16 again."

    "It must have been the 17" said her husband. "It 18 the food out of her throat." The baby's color was turning to normal(正常的), and she was crying in a loud but healthy 19 . They were all joyful, and quite forgot about the accident, the taxi, and the lines of 20all around them.

    My friend and I were at a restaurant in Berkeley for an evening fast food. All of a sudden we decided to do a small act of 1 —to use the smile card to. 2 someone's day.

    Being at a restaurant, we intended to pay for someone else anonymously(匿名)and see what 3. We got all excited with the 4 and set about doing that.

    We looked around for which table we should pay for, and then 5 a table—it seemed like an immigrant family with a few children, 6 their meals at that time. I could sense a family 7 in them and that they were having a nice time together. We called on our waitress to 8 the idea to her.

    As soon as we told her we wanted to pay for another table and showed her the 9, she got super thrilled! We told her about it and made sure she knew we wanted to be anonymous, which made us further 10. After a while, she came back and told us the waitress for that table was 11 to tears when hearing about our idea.

    Soon after, we left, feeling delighted and grateful to get all opportunity to 12 smiles. It is hard to explain how it felt in the moment, but it 13 felt special, not because I was “helping” someone, but because I felt 14 to people I didn't even know—the waitresses and the family. It also, in some form, melted me to see how people 15 to generosity, which has become so 16 in today's commercial lifestyle. I felt something inside me 17.  

    I don't know what happened next, how the family felt and 18 or how the waitresses 19 the situation, but I am sure it brought a few 20 to a few people including myself.

    In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. These things come to represent, in fact, what I call 1 and love.

    I don't remember my father ever getting into a swimming pool. But he did 2 the water. Any kind of 3 ride seemed to give him pleasure. 4 he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along.

    But I never really liked being on the water the way my father did. I liked being  5 the water, moving through it, 6 it all around me. I was not a strong 7, or one who learned to swim early, for I had my 8 .     A poet once said, "We look at life once, in childhood; the rest is 19." And I think it is not only what we "look at once, in childhood" that determines our memories, but 20, in that childhood, look at us.

    I am a nurse working in a hospital. It was a 1 morning when an elderly gentleman 2 to have his heart condition checked by the doctor. He said he was in a hurry 3 he had an appointment at 9:00 a. m.

    I had him take a seat. Since there were a lot of people 4 to see the doctor, I knew it would be over an hour 5 the doctor would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch 6 while waiting. To make him not feel so 7 with nothing to do for long hours, I decided to go over and 8 with him for a while. The gentleman told me that he 9 to go to the nursing home to have breakfast with his mom. His mother had been suffering from a disease and had 10 there for several years.

    As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit 11. He replied, "She can't 12 me now." I was 13, and asked him, "And you still go every morning, 14 she doesn't know who you are?" He smiled and said, "She doesn't know me, but I 15 make out who she is—the woman who gave me not only 16 but a mother's whole love." I was moved to tears and felt very 17 on such a winter day. The 18 between parents and children is everlasting (永恒的).

    Just then, a young man came up and said to the man, "Grandpa, now it's my 19 to see the doctor. I am not in a hurry, so you can do it first." The elderly man was very 20 and went in the doctor's to have his heart examined.
