A Thanksgiving Day story in the newspaper told of a school teacher {#blank#}1{#/blank#} asked her class of first graders to draw a picture of something they were thankful for. She {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (think) of how little these children from poor neighbourhood actually had to be thankful for. But she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys or tables full {#blank#}3{#/blank#} food. The teacher was taken back with the picture Douglas handed in—a small childishly hand!

    But whose hand? The class was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (puzzle) by the abstract drawing. “I think it must be the hand of God {#blank#}5{#/blank#} brings us food,” said one child, “a farmer,” said another, “because he feeds turkeys.” Finally, when the others were at work, the teacher {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (bend) over at Douglas' desk and asked whose hand it was. “It's your hand, Teacher,” he said in a low voice.

    She remembered that {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (frequent) at break she had taken Douglas, a small lonely child, by {#blank#}8{#/blank#} hand. She often did that with the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (child). But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this was everyone's Thanks-giving, not for the material things {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (give) to us but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.

    Disposing(处理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste disposal problem becomes {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(increase) difficult.

    During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot{#blank#}2{#/blank#}a dump site(垃圾场). People {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (transport) household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Regularly some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (pleasant) sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories mills (制造厂), and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (remaining) into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.

    Several facts make these choices {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (accept) to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps,{#blank#}7{#/blank#}are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. The land is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods. A long distance dump has been a common practice,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is nonexistent.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (aware) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.

    {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (recycle) efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city's reusable waste.

    Chinese Kung fu is a{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(tradition) Chinese culture. It is probably one of the earliest sports that use both{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(strong) and brain.

    The theory of kung fu is based{#blank#}3{#/blank#}classical Chinese philosophy. Over its long history it has developed as a unique combination of exercise, practical self-defense, self-discipline, and art. It can date back to ancient times{#blank#}4{#/blank#}people used sticks to fight against wild animals and they gradually{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(gain) experience in self-defense.

    Chinese kung fu is a large system of theory and practice,{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(combine) techniques of self-defense and health-keeping. In sports like track and field and boxing, an athlete{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(usual) has to retire from full participation in his 30s. That is because{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(injury) suffered during years of active sport participation at a young age affect our ability to continue exercising in later life. In Chinese kung fu, however, a difference{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(make) between "external"(外部的) and "internal"(内部的) kung fu. It's said that in external kung fu, you exercise your muscles, bones and skin while in internal kung fu, you train your spirit, qi and mind. So the external body weakens later in life, but on{#blank#}10{#/blank#}contrary, internal kung fu continues.

    China has splendid culture with a long history. Chinese opera is one of the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(old) dramatic art forms in the world. During the Tang Dynasty, the Emperor Taizong established an opera school {#blank#}2{#/blank#}the poetic name Liyuan (Pear Garden).Since the Yuan Dynasty, encouraged by court officials and emperors, it{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(become)a traditional art form. During the Qing Dynasty, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}became fashionable among ordinary people. Performances{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(watch) in tearooms, restaurants, and even on temporary stages.

    It developed from folk songs, dance, talking, antimasque（滑稽戏）and especially distinctive dialectical music. Gradually it combined music, art and literature into one performance on the stage.{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(accompany) by traditional musical instruments, actors present unique melodies which may sound strange to{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(foreign)as well as beautifully written dialogues, which are of high literary{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(valuable).These dialogues also promoted the development of distinct literary styles, such as Zaju in the Yuan Dynasty. For Chinese, especially older folks,{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(listen) to this kind of opera occasionally is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}real pleasure.

The Future Life on Mars

    Compared with the life we {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (live) on the earth now, the future life on Mars will be {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (total) different.

    Firstly, without pollution on Mars, people will be able to drink cleaner water {#blank#}3{#/blank#} breathe fresher air, so they will be {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (health).The food on Mars will be different from {#blank#}5{#/blank#} food now. People will just take {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (pill) and drink man-made juice instead of eating bread and meat. Secondly, people will travel back to the earth or to other planets for sightseeing by spaceship. Additionally, there will be no {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (fix) school and classrooms. Children will just fly to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} classroom {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the school spaceships. And people won't work in factories or companies. They can stay at home, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (work) with computers.
