Have you ever had lucid (清醒的) dreams? Recent studies suggest that the number of people having them is on the rise. Someone having a lucid dream realizes they are dreaming and may from then on" direct" the action, or they may simply " watch" the dream unfold. The sense of awareness (知道) makes it different from a dream that is simply very lively and true to life. And although the description may seem strange, the process is far from alien to many of us.

Studies suggest that the number of people in the Western world experiencing lucid dreams, which happen once in a while, has risen by between 10 and 40 per cent since the 1980s. Today, they are so common that about one in eight of us will have one in our lives. But still, little is known about what causes them or what is behind the rise.

Research carried out at the respected Harvard University in the US shows that the brain is working hard during lucid dreams. In fact, the level of the mental (精神

的) activity in some parts of the brain is similar to that of a person who is awake. Lucid dreamers seem to share certain personal characters. For example, in general they are quite creative. They are also good at digging deep into problems and going out of their way to solve them. Furthermore, they always believe in personal responsibility rather than letting society carry the can.

Our nightmares (噩梦) may show our waking worries, with the five most common ones-- falling, being run after, feeling disabled, being late and the death of a loved one. Men are more likely to have nightmares about fights or being fired while hair and tooth loss appear more in women's nightmares-perhaps showing worries about losing their looks. Research has also found that women have more nightmares than men. Their dreams are also scarier and more unforgettable.

I'm in trouble.

Last week,we had a football match,and we lost. We played well,but one teammate didn't do his best,I think. It was like he wasn't even on the field!Disappointed by what he did,I said all this to my best friend to let out my anger. But he told everyone else what I'd said. I'm really angry with him. What should I say to him?And should I say something to my teammate?

There is an old American saying, "Loose lips sink ships. "This means that if you speak too much about something,especially to people who you don't know so well,it'll cause all kinds of trouble. Maybe now you're in this situation.

I was at the game and you did your best. I think it was awful of your teammate not to try his best. You know,teamwork,is very important. If you play,play it well!But I don't think it's OK to talk behind his back because it might hurt his feelings. Maybe there is a better way to solve the problem.

In my view,no secret is safe. It's natural for your friend to tell others about what you're sharing. This is how we keep close to each other in a group. So,learn the lesson. Next time,keep it to yourself.

I understand why you were angry with your teammate. A successful team requires everyone's effort. But what you did doesn't actually help. Next time in the same situation,try to communicate with your teammate directly and honestly. Besides,when filled with anger,you would say whatever comes to your mind. And that might hurt others. Take a deep breath,calm down,and always remember:think first,speak later. As for the problem with your friend,tell him you're angry because what he did made the situation worse.

Both cats and dogs are popular pets (宠物). Most families, however, can keep only one pet. It can be hard to decide to take a cat or a dog into your home. Here, some middle school students are having a cats VS dogs debate (辩论).

Group A: Donna Walker   We think cats are better for most families. Many people want to keep a pet, but they live a busy life. People don't have to take cats outside to use the bathroom. Instead, they just use a litter box. Their owners (主人) only need to keep the litter box clean. They don't need to worry if they are away at work for most of the day.

Group B: Gary Hall   No, dogs are better. Just think about why you want to keep a pet. Dogs can bring you lots of happiness. When you go back home from school or work, your dog will always welcome you at the door with excitement. When you walk into your room, you may hardly expect your cat to be too excited about seeing you. What's the point in keeping such a pet?

Group A: Brian Ross   Well, cats usually live longer than dogs. Most cats can live up to 15 years while most dogs only have 13 years on the earth. Isn't it nice to be able to spend more time with your pet?

Group B: Annie Miller   But dogs are more loyal. A dog never leaves its owner no matter what happens. Dogs also keep you safe. If a bad man tries to break into your house, your dog will drive him away with loud barks (吠叫).

Group A: Paula Lee   Yeah, dogs make so much noise! Some dogs bar k at almost every stranger, but are there so many bad men? Cats, however, are quiet most of the time.

Group B: Eric Bell   Dogs can be trained well. Cats have claws (爪子) and they are interested in everything. They can cause much more trouble!
