Science fiction is a popular kind of writing, and many people think of Jules Verne(儒勒·凡尔纳) as the father of science fiction. He was born in France in 1828. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but from his early 20s Verne decided to become a writer. At first he wrote plays for the theater. Then, in 1863, he wrote a story called Five Weeks in a Balloon. The success of this book encouraged him to write more stories such as A Journey to the Center of the Earth(1864) and From the Earth to the Moon(1865).

    In the 19th century, many people were interested in science and inventions. Jules Verne wrote about scientific subjects in his stories and, as a result, they were very popular. Verne's writing included many predictions(预言) for the 20th century and many of them came true. He described space flight, movies, and air conditioning, a long time before they appeared. These books were very successful and they made Verne rich.

    Jules Verne's books have been the subjects for many movies. 20, 000 Leagues under the Sea was a successful movie for Walt Disney. It was the first time that Disney movie had used real actors instead of cartoon drawings. Around the World in Eighty Days is another famous movie based on one of Verne's books. The main character is an Englishman called Phileas Fogg. For him, the most important thing is to be always on time!

Throughout the year, 1 school organizes charity (慈善) events and activities. One of 2 events of the year is the food drive. So far, this 3 a very successful charity event and most of the students have taken part in it. Each school does its food drives 4 . However, most of the time the food drives are set up in a similar style. 

In my school it usually lasts for 5 weeks. Students will bring the food 6 home. The food 7 for a long period of time, such as canned goods and pastas. We 8 organize activities outside the school. Some students go door to door around their neighborhood asking if people are willing to donate (捐献) some food. Some set up donation boxes in churches and 9 areas such as stores or cinemas. The students all work really hard and the members of the community are very supportive. 

After that time is over, we will bring the collected food to our local Community Table. The families in our community can go for 10 warm meal if they need to. Usually, a group of students go with one of our teachers to send the food. I 11 food with our teacher last year, and I was 12 to see so many families who suffering from hunger in our community. 

I was glad that our school was able 13 all of those families. We do this several times each year. 14 meaningful event! Sure, we can't change the world, 15 we can do our best to make our world a better place.

Hundreds of years ago, a Norse (挪威的) army came from the north of Europe and stepped onto the land of Scotland. The Scots, a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to keep the Norsemen out of Scotland, but there were too many of them. It looked as if the Norsemen would win.

One night, the leader of Scots took his soldiers to the top of a hill." We will rest here tonight, my men," he said." Tomorrow we will have another fight. We must win or we will die."

They were all very tired, so they ate their dinner quickly and fell asleep. There were four soldiers on duty, watching out for any danger at night. But they were also very tired. One by one, they fell asleep as well.

The Norsemen were not asleep. Very soon, they came together at the foot of the hill. In order to walk quietly, the Norsemen took off their shoes. Slowly they climbed up the hillside without making any sound. Closer and closer, they moved towards the sleeping Scots. They were almost there. A few minutes more, the war would be over.

Suddenly, one of the Norse soldiers put his foot on a thistle(蓟) and got hurt. He cried out and his sudden cry woke up all the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready to fight. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots drove the Norsemen away and saved their country.

From then on, the thistle has become popular in Scotland. Although it is not beautiful and has sharp needles all over it, Scottish people still make it their national flower.

The girls spent the rest of the day preparing a play. The sisters often performed plays for their friends. A lot of girls arrived about six o' clock and took their places in the big bedroom. The play was a great success. Everybody enjoyed it very much. The girls were still laughing and clapping when Hannah came in and said," Supper is ready."

A surprise was waiting for them on the dining room table- dishes of ice cream, pink and white, fresh fruit, cakes and real French chocolates. And in the middle of all this delicious food there were four vases of beautiful flowers. The girls couldn't believe their eyes.

" Did the fairies bring the supper?" asked Amy.

" No, Santa Claus brought it," said Beth.

" Mother did it," Meg said.

" No! Aun t March sent it!" cried Jo.

" You are all wrong," said Mrs. March." Old Mr. Laurence sent it."

" The Laurence boy's grandfather!" Said Meg." Why did he do that? We don't know him!"

" Hannah told one of his servants(仆人) the story of the Hummels. Mr. Laurence was sorry to hear about your poor Christmas breakfast, so he decided to give you a surprise."

" My mother says he's very proud," said one of the girls at the table." She says that he doesn't like mixing with his neighbors. His grandson has to stay in the house and study all day. We invited him to a party once, but he didn't come. He's very shy."

"I am going to talk to him one day," said Jo." He needs to have some fun. I am going to invite him to our next play!"

 From Little Women

Peter is a 1 in the Sunshine Middle School. His 2 name is Brown. He is eight years old and he is in 3 , Grade 4. He likes 4 a lot because he thinks they are very cute. He often 5 about animals with his classmates.

Peter visits his uncle and aunt every summer. They 6 on a farm. They have many kinds of animals like cows, 7 , sheep and a big horse. Peter loves all the animals there.

This summer, he is going to 8 how to milk a cow. His 9 cannot believe (相信) it. "We get our milk from the 10 ," they say. "But our friend is going to get it from a cow."

Peter laughs. "Milk doesn't come from the store," he says. "Milk comes from a cow." His friends do not believe him so they 11 their teacher. The teacher says, "Peter is 12 . Milk comes from cows. Cows eat grass. They change (改变) the grass into milk. Then the farmer sells (卖) the milk. And we 13 it in the stores."

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. Within a short period of time the fern 4 grew from the earth," the hermit continued. "But even though the bamboo seed was cared for years, there was no sign of 5 . But I did not give up on the bamboo seed and continued to water and take care of it. By the fifth year,a very small sprout(芽) came out from the earth. And within six months, the tree grew 6 tall. It was as tall as a seven-storey building."

"Did the bamboo stay still for four years and then grow a lot in the fifth?" asked the hermit. The man didn' t know what to say.

"It's simple," said the hermit. "It was making 7 roots underground. These roots helped it grow big in the fifth year and keep growing."

"Did you know that all the times you had been struggling(挣扎), you were growing strong 8 ?" said the hermit.

 The man learned his9 that day. He understood that persistence and hard work can10 , even if it takes time. The fern and the bamboo stood right in front of him as he walked towards his life to continue to work on his dreams.
